Hopefully I can use the JUnit test framework because I am familiar with that. Shell scripting is cool... but I miss languages with libraries
Today is "deploy the world" day. All of our teams are deploy new versions of their products today so it is going to be crazy and hectic around the office and I probably won't get much real work done either.
Best part about deploy days though is the free breakfast and lunch 🙌
Does anyone know if you can write unit test cases for UI with the JUnit framework?
I'm sure they wouldn't want you to be stressing yourself out this much. Ramping up and getting the hang of things can take months at a big company
No not so much pressure, I just wanna get started on stuff but you're right. It does take months
@tiaalexa Depends on the nature of the UI but it seems like unit testing should be done in the model, right? Because the view (UI) is just a reflection of the model?
Well see the application is off the shelf, an oracle product and so we're trying to find a solution for UI testing that is automated.
Can you test UI the same way? Like, isn’t UI testing just making sure that if the user puts in like a sql injection, it won’t cause the application to throw up on itself?
It's like creating a test session and seeing if the user activity (IE: login) has the desired outcome you expect (Success)
I just bought coffee for $5 .. I am, officially back in Seattle
haha I've actually moved to my desk at this point because I need to get shit done
jk i was in the office till 8pm last night so i am having a late start
wait keenin what is going on? you got an offer for a date?
Tia do you get into the office every day before 8am?? that is so early...
oh right you didn't have one yet - weird situation.
dude i got thrown in the mosh last night, and running on 4 hours of sleep
totally worth it but yeah I got pushed into a dude who was pushing anyone in his sight like making them fling lowkey
Well I have my meeting with PayScale this Friday at 130. Not sure how long it will take though
ahhh i see, well we are coming up to bham at 3 so idk if I am taking a lunch that day since I am heading out early
I know... good thing most of my scripting for the week is pretty close/very close to being done
a meeting should never be 3 hours haha. It's like a sprint story being a month long... shouldn't happen
It's hard to plan that far out the exact things I'll be working on
Yeah, I bet. It just seems more efficient to take lots of tiny steps instead of slow giant ones.
ErgoDox Ergonomic Keyboard on sale on MassDrop, 60% off MSRP!!
Doesn't ship until February, so you'll be in Seattle when it comes
Once you go to this keyboard, you can never type on a reg keyboard again lol, jk...kinda
@keenin I'm shopping for a keyboard and mouse for my desktop (and also a gift for my brother for christmas). Do you have any suggestions?
This is the MechKeyboard I got, I really like it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0068INSUM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Yea dude!!! Tia and I were talking about this earlier, it’s coming to Seattle!!!!
It would be such a huge efficiency boost!! :D waiting in line is the worst
In the office meeting is really the only case where it's a game changer lol
All the other instances just made the people seem too lazy to grab their phone
That's a pretty sweet technology if it actually works right. It would be cool with things like AR/VR and I could see that taking the place of a keyboard at a computer if it works reliably enough. They didn't explain how it works at all though...Also, they need to make it less bulky too. But, really cool!
I've been collecting cs books (in pdf form) and slowly working my way through them. They are in a folder in my google drive. If anyone is interested, let me know and I can share them with you. The list consists of: Bash Cookbook, Bach Pocket Reference, Classic Shell Scripting, Learning GNU Emacs, Learning the Bash Shell, Learning the Vi and Vim Editors, Leanring UNIX for OSX, Lex and Yac, Linux Pocket Guide, Sed and Awk, UNIX in a Nutshell, UNIX Power tools, Fluent Python, Python Machine Learning, Mastering Python for Data Science, Spring in Action, Hadoop In Practice, and Java Programming Language.
yeah forsure, I usually try and clean out my closet once a year to make room.
That guys having a BAD day. I wonder if he's still going to have a job..haha
that is the type of stuff you assume never can happen
it seems like so much work to do though. plus you need to learn morse code or something - cause it only sends info via the pattern of its blinking? or how does it send the data via the led light?
Yeah, the data is sent through a series of blinks. The light diode can read 4,000 blinks/sec though so its not that slow. And its not exactly morse code either. They call it on-off keying but I'm not familiar with it. I'm assuming its similar to binary in some way. Regardless, I think the computer does the decoding for you so you wouldn't have to learn morse code or anything like that.
oh interesting. i don't understand it but i'm glad someone out there does. time to tape up any LED lights on the laptop
eventually the only safe place to use your computer will be in a fully cemented room with no windows
haha yeah, exactly. And luckily, your LEDs won't actually share anything with the world by default. Your device would have to infiltrated and manipulated to make the light blink in a specific pattern. But yeah, all this tech is getting ridiculous! ...but also awesome
yeah haha it is crazy stuff. i totally get why non- tech savvy people are paranoid of technology. when you start to not understand how something works you really have to have faith in the people protecting your data like banking info, credit cards, social security, etc
haha yeah, I'm afraid tech is moving faster than anyone can comprehend at this point
hey how much is your total rent $/mo as a house?
I'm starting to get activity on discuss.elastic.co even when I don't post. This past week, I had one person open up one of my old threads for further discussion and another tagged me in a new thread for advice on a similar issue to one of the ones I was having. Pretty cool getting to contribute to the Elastic community 👍
Also, here's an archive of presentations from ElasticON '17 just because
I'm going to try to watch this one on machine learning tomorrow. Not sure what the ELK stack has to do with machine learning but I'm curious!
https://www.elastic.co/elasticon/conf/2017/sf/machine-learning-in-the-elastic-stack?ultron=elasticon-video&blade=non-attendee-follow-up-&hulk=email
That's really cool! Nice job contributing and helping people out! I'm interested in watching that video too
We use a ML app with Splunk, it can be useful for alerts and watching trending data/anomolies
I watched about half the presentation already. It's pretty cool how you can apply the model on the fly to time series data within Kibana. I'm sure the Splunk is pretty much the same
Got bored half way through, but that's still pretty interesting. I like to think I'm good at video games, but I wasn't very good at her little attention tests lol
Yeah, I skipped through it as well and was in the same boat for the rain coat yellow/blue test
Premature-optimization is the root of all good!
today i heard that employees with spark skills at netflix make $350k/year
lol no it came from someone i work with who has a friend at netflix
on payscale, are you able to filter by skill rather than job title?
andelink: Only if we have a statistically significant amount of data to support it. I kind of wish our data thresholds were lower so that we could display more data. We only have 60 confirmed reports from Netflix right now so it's not too interesting.
Of one our interns is doing a POC implementing our training data generation in spark. Once he has something solid, I'm sure I'll get familiar with his work and spark in general 👍
If only Netflix was an enjoyable place to work lol
I've been spending the last couple months in spark so I'm feeling good. Should update my linkedin.
Is Netflix not enjoyable? Is that well-known?
That's cool! Once I have time to invest in it, I'll definitely ask you questions! You should definitely update that LinkedIn haha. I need to do the same.
At least a couple of years ago, they were very open in saying that (paraphrasing) as soon as an employee isn't producing, or has finished a big project and there isn't an obvious next project for them, they won't hesitate to let them go. NPR did a podcast with the Netflix employee who basically designed this "good goodbye" system. They only keep you as long as they absolutely need you and you are producing, regardless of the effort you put in. Obviously this isn't all bad, but it can make for a stressful place to work.
It would make leaving my current job for a Netflix job much more risky I wouldnt want to be dumped in 10 months if I finished a project and then have a month before the next strong project comes along
Yeah I had no idea about that until I listened to that one podcast. I would be hesitant to go there myself too.
Someone at my work is collecting eclipse glasses to send to Africa for their eclipse next year. The glasses only last 3 years so there is really no use in keeping them. If you were lucky enough to have a pair for today, you should send them in or give them to me to give to my coworker 👍
They basically said that they're all busy and don't want the quality of the podcast to degrade. They said they might pick it up again later
Oh ok. Good to know, thanks. That podcast was awesome. I didn't know you still listened to it though. Once I start taking the bus again, I'll have to catch up.

Dude the video is hilarious! the dogs in it are just like, wtf is this shit flying around?
lol it's ridiculously big and it sounds like a vacuum haha
And yeah, Amazon will of course be able to lower that cost a shit ton when they decide to compete.
If they decide yeah. I personally don't see the appeal
Yeah that'd be nice but it's so big lol later iterations will surely be amallwr
Who is Vadim Belonenko? He added me on LinkedIn and @brandon and @keenin know him, but I do not know him. Who is he?
Hmm I'm always torn between adding randos on LinkedIn and trying to keep my LinkedIn pure and real
@spkaplan
I would like to update my opinion and say that I always add recruiters I interface with
OOP is difficult to me. The design of everything takes way too long
And the more you learn, the more you hate old stuff you've built
A Coworker of mine posted this finance blog in slack the other day and I really like it so far. Have any of you guys heard of MMM? Several of my coworkers had. Anyway, figured some might be interested so here's an introductory post.
if James Gosling was giving a talk at your company, would you attend?
Okay me too! Couple members of my team just called it "nerd-gawking" which it is to an extent but this guy is legendary in the tech world
Yeah, it is kind of true, but depending on the topic of the talk, he might have good stuff to say. Yeah, he's the father of Java! 😄
You guy's think it's worth it to wait until Cyber Monday to buy a TV? On Amazon a 55in TV is 25% off right now, think it will go lower?
I haven't looked at tv prices in a while, so I don't have a good intuition on whether it is worth waiting. @brandon thoughts?
Tough thing about deal holidays on Amazon is that the really good stuff is limited in quantity and Prime members get early access to them
I can pull what deals will be in place though ;)
Oh snap dude, that'd be awesome!! Can you check what deals will be on TVs?!
What day is cyber Monday? When does your deal expire? It will take some time because I am not as familiar with the datasets as I used to be
Damnit, didn't see this comment. Now I'm the one that googled it for no reason haha
So I will decide if it's worth it to share or not :)
Hmm not sure about that brand. Haven't heard of it before. But the reviews and the price look good!
Exactly... and our one Amazon employee here is really dragging his feet on giving me the details lol
lol sorry dude i am at work right now i can't be at my desk pulling confidential data non-related to my job to share with people outside of Amazon
Aight sweet! Thanks dude! I'm pretty sure it won't go below 33% off. It's currently at 25% and it used to be at 33% in like September. I'm guessing they raised the price and then are just going to drop it back to what it was for Cyber Monday.
I'm pretty sure I sent you guys (everyone in 806 and maybe a couple others) an excel file with all of the BF/CM deals a couple years ago
maybe i just offered to let you know of good deals
will update to ensure bf/cm deals show up. but these will be the deals that are currently planned and approved for bf/cm, this can change as vendor terms come and go
@keenin there is not many TVs scheduled for CM/BF deals yet. there are only 5 listed right now and none that good (the tv you posted is much nicer). as we get closer to the actual holiday dates there will be much more approved and listed. i will keep you posted
if anyone else has some specific requests, let me know and i can take a peak for you
it's certainly a blurry line, which i was i am being intentionally vague online
Long video! Anything in particular I should be looking for here? It was funny that he couldn't use Edge
Yea, just the Edge thing, thought it was funny. That would be a hard situation. Show that your features work, but only on another browser, or just say that the feature is under development or something. They don't look too good either way, but I think that guy handled it like a champ.
Haha yeah, Microsoft just needs to give up on the browser. Google has won that fight. Azure isn't actually too bad. My work has started using it instead of AWS in some cases.
Haha have you tried Azure?! 😉 We are actually still considering both options. As a C# shop, there are a lot of free integrations we get by using a Microsoft product. Also, Azure tends to be cheaper for short running tasks as they have a more incremental pricing scheme. I don't think they currently have a feature set that can match aws though. I'm definitely still a fan of aws and we use it for the majority of our operations. But there have been times recently when using Azure made more sense.
lol i'm just joking around. i haven't used anything other than aws and i never really need to consider the costs when i do so i am pretty biased and don't have real knowledge of alternative solutions
I know, that's what the wink was for 😉 haha Just thought I'd explain myself anyway in case others had similar experiences.
i definitely enjoy hearing about other people's opinion of the different cloud services because here it is all aws aws
Is anyone else having a hard time scheduling vacation days with your significant other? it's like so hard for lauren to get days off but I have maxed out my vacation days and am no longer accruing any, but I don't want to spend vacation days just to sit in my apartment alone.
Haven't had toooo much trouble thankfully. I have vacation days I have to use by the end of the year, but steph accrues hers and doest have any to spare before the end of the year, so I am taking two short trips to visit friends in bham and California.
Oh I see. I haven’t considered taking trips alone. But I don’t think I really have friends outside of this area. Hmm will need to think
Yeah, if I didn't have friends outside of the area I'm not sure what I would use my vacation time for by myself. That's a tricky one. Definitely calls for getting creative.
Will update this thread when I figure something out
Yeah, this can be tricky. I feel like you really just have to plan WAY ahead.
Are you taking time off in December @brandon ? Did you plan sufficiently far enough in advance!
haha well, my employer has decided to go with the "Unlimited PTO" approach meaning I feel no pressure to take vacation ever. The psychology of it is interesting since I might actually take less vacation with this policy. I'm planning on taking part of Christmas week off or working from home just for fun though. A lot of people will be out of town anyway so the office will be pretty quiet.
Yeah I also want to take a week off around Xmas but when Lauren is working I’d just be at home doing what... playing video games? Working a little? Idk seems weird. I think your situation though is a little psychologically easier. You don’t feel a “need” to take vacation. That would be nice actually
Yeah, I don't really know what I'll do either. I'll probably start brainstorming a fun coding project to do or something so I don't just game and veg the whole time. And yeah, that makes sense. It almost makes vacation seem like a chore when you feel forced to take it.
Yeah sounds like we’re in similar boats about holiday this year. Kelli working?
Yea, brandon's situation is pretty nice, just take a few days off here and there during xmas time and then leave your big trips for like feb/mar or something.
I haven't had a problem, but Sarah doesn't work lol. Usually I'll go visit my dad, but also been planning a solo trip.
Tell me more about this solo trip (looking for inspiration)
Yeah, she's working at Triangle Associates. She accrues time off based on hours worked but I'm not sure on the details. She doesn't really feel like she's been working there long enough to feel comfortable taking a vacation so I haven't put too much thought into it. I should plant the idea of a feb/mar vacation like keenin mentioned.
Any of you have a Chromebook? If so, how do you like it?
I have one. I wasn't using it for a while but recently started using it when I'm on the go or just want to look up stuff quickly. I also use it to read the money mustache blog or do other research in bed or something. It's pretty much just an internet machine. The only apps you can count on having for it are apps you can get as Chrome plugins.
The other pros are that it's super cheap and has a solid state drive so it starts up and shuts down in like less than 10 seconds.
@brandon and I do. They are about 3 years old if I remember correctly, so the chromebook world has completely changed. I think they are really great devices though! Extremely affordable, lightweight, amazing battery life. It all depends on what you want a laptop for. If you mainly want to use web-based apps, then a chromebook definitely might be a good fit. They also make good secondary machines because depending on how powerful you want your, it can be very cheap, if you are looking for something to complement a more heavy duty machine, like a full sized laptop.
I am getting a new personal laptop this holiday season, and am leaning towards a Chromebook for all the reasons you listed.
I have my work laptop for work stuff. Everything non-work I do is mostly cloud based stuff.
I do however want a command line interface and to be able to easily work with AWS services. Have you guys explored developer mode at all?
Reading some things, it seems quite tedious using CLI AWS tool or even SSH-ing into an EC2 instance. Annoying...
I have developer mode enabled with a full shell/crouton plus a separate partition with linux installed where I can run both at the same time and switch between the two without restarting the device. It's been so long since I used those features though that I would have to look up the commands to start linux up. Most of the time I just simply will want to use a different device that has a little bit more muscle when I'm doing anything other than browsing.
From what you remember about working with your Linux partition, it's easy enough to use and most of the functionality you would expect is there?
I also really enjoy that mine is a touch screen (22"). However if I were to get one again I would make sure to get one that can fold all the way in half instead of just ~270 degrees.
Yeah, I think the linux partition was a standard linux build. I think the flavor was Xubuntu if I recall correctly. It was always kind of slow too though. My device only has 2 gb of ram so running two OS' side by side was always kind of a silly thing to do which is why I don't do it anymore. I would honestly be fine without developer mode too.
Yeah, I would start with developer mode, and only dual-boot if developer mode isn’t working for you for some reason.
I am also being selfish and requiring 2-in-1 touchscreen functionality
But it sounds like our use cases may be different since you kind of want this to be your primary device
I agree, I like that one a lot. But if you are looking for something to be more of a primary personal machine, I would consider getting a slightly beefier chromebook.
As long as you aren't doing complex computing on it, that's probably fine. It's already got 4gb of ram which is double what mine has and the screen is the same size as mine.
@andelink Is storage space on the machine important to you? Do you store most of your content in something like google drive? Do you want to work with large files locally?
@andelink of the links you sent, all but 1 are 12". If you aren’t considering 12", can you send another set of links?
There are so few chromebooks larger than 12.5""
I feel like ChromeOS kind of forces you to use cloud storage anyway. Besides downloading attachments which you probably have to open in a cloud based editor (Google Sheets). So, I wouldn't worry too much about storage space.
@spkaplan storage space isn't that important. main requirement is installing a linux build and usual CLI tools. trying to move away entirely from expecting anything to be locally available
@brandon I ask just because some do have 64gb and I want to understand if that is something Kyle specifically wants. I totally agree with you about cloud storage though 👍
They are really meant to be lightweight and portable. You can hold them with one hands and read laying down with them. They are really marketing that way so you may have trouble finding larger heavier weight models.
It very quickly limits you to a single model when you filter by large with touch screen
@brandon the great thing about cloud-based devices is that the software is always up-to-date!
Yeah I don't blame you that is what I want as well. Got Lauren a 2-in-1 laptop last year for xmas and I soooo much regret not getting one for myself as well haha! All I want now
That's one thing I love about this slack workspace! Great collaboration :D
Looks like this is exactly what I need for Chromebook + AWS environment:
@brandon uploaded a file: IMG_20171124_123342.jpg and commented: Here is what my ~12" ChromeBook looks like.
@andelink commented on @brandon’s file https://soundstack.slack.com/files/U2494HTLP/F858JLR5G/img20171124123342.jpg: Thanks for uploading though - solidified my opinion
@spkaplan commented on @brandon’s file https://soundstack.slack.com/files/U2494HTLP/F858JLR5G/img20171124123342.jpg: For a primary machine, I totally understand wanting more like 13" or 14"
"Bezos could become the world's first trilionaire in the next 25 years"
www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-net-worth-2017-10
Buy AMZN stock now, folks! Most of his wealth comes from AMZN shares. If he is to really become a trillionaire in the next 25 years, the stock price must go up a lot!!
I had RSU's granted to me 2 years ago when I first joined, and the price has nearly doubled
I had some more granted to me at the beginning of this year and it's gone up over $400+ since
I have a fair amount given to me and I am still tempted to buy more on my own lol
@andelink uploaded a file: AMZN stock price and commented: Hypergrowth
Will have to watch that video during one of the breaks
Oh, it is? That's why he keeps talking about Expedia and is wearing their shirt...haha
Saw the news that they went all in on AWS today. That's cool. We, on the other hand, have decided to migrate to Azure haha
Definitely seems like an interesting move on my managements side. However, Azure offers a lot of built in integration for C# and they are actually often cheaper since they charge by the minute/transaction and not the hour. They also offer better analytics/insights from what I've seen believe it or not.
I don't know much about Azure, but the breadth of offerings of AWS sort of blow other cloud competitors away (in my understanding).
Re billing: AWS offers per-second billing on its EC2 instances and EBS volumes. So depending on your use-cases, this could be huge savings
Microsoft and AWS leading the way:
@brandon i am only a couple min into the Amazon video but it is pretty funny so far. this guy talking is so old school
Haha! it gets funnier and funnier. Bezos' laugh is pretty hilarious
God this 60 Minutes guy is from the dinosaur age. Every time he says "computer", he includes an insult to "computer nerds" and acts as if the computer is something laughable
Hahaha one of the youtube comments: The woman who fucks this man deserves at least half of his wealth.
A reply to above comment: He could pay a decent escort/prositute every hour for the rest of his life and it would be cheaper
When coding in Python and need CLI arguments, do you guys ever use sys.argv? or is it always an argument package like argparse? I personally hate when I see my teammates using sys.argv as it is terribly unreadable
I hate seeing sys.argv too. Definitely use argparse. OR my favorite (if you have control over your environment) is docopt.
It's so intuitive and easy to use. Might as well code in C if you use sys.argv.
I always use argparse. Always. Ever since you (@spkaplan) posted about docopt in hutch-research, I have been meaning to check it out but haven't gotten around to it
docopt is great (from my understanding) because it auto-populates arguments based on your doc string - which all pep-compliant Python packages should have. And if you don't use doc strings, docopt would force you to write them, doing the world a lot of good
Yea looking at it, is makes your CLI comments basically into your code. Very sexy.
haha nice. That would be fun if I had alexa and played destiny. It will be interesting to see what other video games follow with this type of integration.
Yeah me too! The next few years will be pretty exciting
I'm realizing devs are just humans too. Doing their best, while making mistakes along the way like all of us other mere mortals. They are not as all-knowing as I thought they were.
I never realized until just now when I caught a pretty big structural bug in a pull request from the senior developer on my team and I thought I was losing my mind when no one else was seeing it.
Idk about your guys’ companies, but devs at Amazon are the only first-class citizens. There is no second-class. It skips straight to last-class to separate us peasants from the aristocracy. And their compensation is mouth-watering
Oh I’m trying to say the opposite. Devs are top bitch here
haha yeah, I was confused by this as well. I just figured bottom bitch was a positive thing in this context somehow
For my fellow switch owners out there (@andelink @keenin)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=P3Bd3HUMkyU
This is bazaar and amazing. This is what I love about the switch. They are doing the stuff that nobody else is thinking of.
Do you mean bizarre? Lol.
It’s quite interesting, but I don’t really get it. It’s a cardboard box that you can turn into an extension of the Switch, including a piano keyboard? How does it work?
I do love the switch though. I’m at a bar rn playing Zelda as I wait for Lauren to get here. I bring it everywhere
haha yeah, oops. Typo. Yeah, it's basically a bunch of cardboard controller extensions that allow you to turn the switch into different types of toys/controllers.
And yeah, dude. It's a really cool console. And zelda is awesome. It's a pretty large game too. I still feel like I have more than half the game left to play.
The labo seems super innovative. I’m excited to learn more and hopefully play around with it. Looks like it is released april
And yeah man it’s a massive game, at least for me. I’ve beaten the first two divine beasts, got the master sword, and am now about to start the 3rd divine beast. But I still feel like there is still so much more to do.
How does the scope compare to a big open game like Skyrim?
Oh wow, you are farther than me! haha But I also got mario kart and "beat" that so I've been distracted. I've only defeated one divine beast (the elephant one). I feel like Skyrim feels bigger however I think they share a lot of similarities. Zelda just focuses on different stuff. It has more puzzling elements whereas skyrim focuses more on lore and more intricate story telling.
Finally listened to it. Pretty good! I haven't heard of either of those artists before.
Phew I thought I would be commenting on this for the rest of my life lol
Anyone have any experience with sneaking weed onto a plane? I bought these peppermint mint edibles that look just like altoids. Hoping to switch the mint cans and be on my merry way but I’m still paranoid...
Really? Like straight flower? Won’t the X-ray machines see something out of place in there?
Yea flower in a plastic baggy. But honestly, their edibles, keep it in its packaging and put it in your mint tin and you'll be good. I've taken gummies still in their original packaging on a plane.
Not trying to ruin my life for weed but I’m going to risk it anyways
Lol first day at the job and no one on my team is here. I don’t have a laptop and my manager is in Mexico.
I thought it had been even longer than that. I remember Brandon T. talking about it when we had beers with him before graduation. Maybe it wasn't officially owned by Dell at that point though.
Yeah I knew who you were referring to. Just thought it was funny how really the only way to be clear is to spell out his last name since you both have the same last initial 🙂
my bad I didn't even know what the hashtag meant... but yeah I will thread my messages
Look at this mess of a conversation! It's spilling all over the place! #threadthisshit 💯
Dude threading makes life so much more manageable. I can hardly tell who’s talking about what and what’s talking about who when conversations aren’t threaded.
#threadthisshit for life
i'm only going to respond to messages in threads and never start a new chat
Well no go ahead and start new threads. Just don’t let Keenin derail them with his inability to properly thread :)
For you devs out there, how can you relate to this?
I personally love the bits about "terrible solution holding everything together" and "yesterday: a mythical place where stuff has to be ready according to info from tomorrow"
Threaded to appease the Slack gods.
The data gathering one is literally the worst shit...
@keenin I feel that on a spiritual level...
Haha finally had a chance to look at this. Luckily, I haven't experienced these things too much but the data gathering and legacy code are definitely relatable.
Here's the first paragraph of the about page
Dwitter.net is a challenge to see what awesomeness you can create when limited to only 140 characters of javascript and a canvas. Give it a go!
That is cool. Will check out on the laptop when I get home
That's a super cool service. Especially now with certs market getting blown up.
Can someone explain it to me a bit. Like who would actually use it, why they would use it, and how it would be helpful. I mean, I guess it would be nice to know what was stolen, but it doesn't really do anything to stop it. And I feel like somebody could use a service like that to actually find more secrets if they are able to hack it.
You can put the secret link in a text file or just drop a .HTML file in folder with secret stuff. Your Bitcoin wallet password for example. If anyone accesses the link, it sends you an email or text. At that point, you know you have been compromised and should check for viruses and change your pw and what not. It doesn't do anything to stop it but at least you know now. And it doesn't really work the other way. If someone hacks this guy's system all he can see is that a URL is registered to you. They have no idea where you have put the URL and can't use it to trace your info at all. Does that make sense?
I just don't get why you would want to store stuff at a secret link, and I don't know anything about how Bitcoin works so I don't know why you would want to store your password online... But I guess for what it does, it really, uh... does it haha
You don't store anything at the link. You just place the link next to your stuff as a booby trap. The link literally goes nowhere. It just fires off the event to notify you.
Ah, that's what I was missing. Makes sense now. Only works as long as they click on it tho, right?
Yeah, they have to click on it or access it programatically using curl or something. Basically if any sort of traffic goes to the url, you will be notified.
One review:
"As a songwriter I got a laugh at this however it’s quite enjoyable like listening to a child bang out a keyboard in perfect key."
I wonder how the model is trained? Are there labels (e.g. human feedback/rating)?
No idea. From the article:
it “us[es] a collection of audio samples and a deep recurrent neural network,” suggesting that it either a) has samples of individual notes from instruments or b) splices together or layers snippets of sampled audio the algorithm believes will work well together. DeepMusic says that the music it creates has “no post-production editing by a human.”
yep! I love SRW! I haven't gone this round yet but usually it is awesome to go to the nicer ones when you wouldn't normally go
Yeah, I definitely want to go somewhere fancy but I feel like the lines have just got to be ridiculous, right? Can you still make reservations?
Do you guys every feel overwhelmed at work? Like "dear f**ing god I have no idea what I'm doing how did I end up with this responsibility I'm just a local state college kid????" and then you literally feel the stress taking years off of your life? Because if so, me too.
Aw I am so sorry you feel that way. I used to feel like that, but switching jobs has really made my stress level go down. And I am even adding extra work to myself but due to enjoyment. Not stress
Ups and downs you know. Right now is a lot.
Glad to hear that job switch is going well 🙂 pretty big win!
I do not feels this way, hence why I found a new job lol.
That sucks. Sorry you are feeling so shitty. You know I'd have your back if you wanted to come work with some compensation data 😉 I think I luckily have a very good work/life balance.
Just make sure you aren't the one stressing yourself out! It's usually not worth it.
just had my 1:1 and I'm going to be a full-stack dev for our team 😄
Making calls to different suppliers for car/hotel, calling 3rd party insurance, fraud checks, payment/transaction services.
Well, that's just a dinosaur...
The more I think about this, the more incredible it is. He's juggling, solving 3 rubiks cubes, and rotating them without looking when he doesn't even know how they are falling in his hand 🤪🤯
Not sure what this twitter is haha someone just posted this at my work so I thought I'd pass it on.
anyone know what router I should get?? (I AM VERY BAD AT THIS)
- ASUS RT-AC66U
- ASUS RT-AC56U
- ASUS RT-AC68U
- Apple AirPort Extreme (5th generation or newer)
- Netgear R7000 Nighthawk
PPL ON MY TEAM REFUSE TO USE THREADS AND WE HAVE 100+ TROLLING CONVO AND IT'S GETTING ANNOYING
sounds like something keenin would do 🙄 lol
@spkaplan @keenin and anyone else with a cat: do anyone of you have experience with cat repellent stuff? I don't want to use it but I can't get my cat to stop scratching up my bedroom door whenever I go in it (I don't let her in because I'm technically allergic to cats and I need a safe space)
I had that problem with my old cat, she always wanted to sleep in the same room and would complain. Honestly the best thing was to just let her in lol. I suffered through the allergy, I think it helped build a better bond though.
The thing is she doesn't do that at night when we go to sleep. It's only during the day time while we are awake
Yeah, we just have to leave our bedroom door open, otherwise she meows and scratches at the door. I haven’t found anything to deter it 😕
Hella needy. Perfectly content doing their thing when we’re 20ft away - as long we’re in the same room. Moment there is a door between us though they’re big cry babies
Also, I've finally got on Reddit. Any good subs?
Yeah, you just have to get into a habit of checking if their is a community related to something you're interested in. r/all and "Popular" is a shit show most of the time so it's important to cull your own list. I have a couple guilty pleasure subreddits but try to keep most of them educational/informational and of personal interest.
Seconded what brandon says, you'll keep some of the main subs for entertainment, but the rest are your own.
Anyone else have a hard time working without headphones in? I forgot mine at home and oh boy
Only sometimes when there are a lot of discussions going on around me and it's loud. Most of the time I don't need them.
There's construction going on at my building right now so it's super loud. They usually stop late-morning/midday once most people are here but earlier hours is rough
Oh yeah, with construction or loud noises it it's definitely tough. I honestly don't use my headphones much at work these days though. Maybe an hour or so per day max.
Yeah I use mine maybe 0-2 hours day. But if there was construction, then I would definitely wear them a lot.
Really? That’s surprising to me. Even without construction I usually have them in. Even if no music is playing oddly enough
haha yeah, I do that sometimes too but most of the time I try to be available for questions or team decisions being made around me.
I usually just ping someone if they have their headphones in and they are needed
Yeah, that totally works too. I don't know. Honestly, music is distracting for me a lot of times unless I put on like instrumental or classical haha
I actually used to be so lost without my headphones but now that I am a mentor this summer I don't listen to music as much until everyone leaves and I have some heads down time by myself
That makes sense. Sometimes all the keyboard typing can catch my attention too much, but my heads down time is in the mornings because my team doesn't show up until like 10:30am. (developers, amirite?)
When does most of your teams show up?
I have one that shows up at 7:30 and another that shows up at 10. And then people around me usually gradually show up by around 9 or so.
LOL i show up at 9:30/10 so I can stay late and have the office to myself because everyone leaves early to avoid traffic caused by Amazon and FB
Most of my team varies between 9 and 10:30
@brandon That's reasonable.
@tiaalexa I feel like 10:30 is bit late lol. but it's the developers glory days rn they can do w/e they want because people are desperate for them
My team is five developers, two scientists, and two data engineers, plus PM and dev manager. I get here at 7:30, and the two oldest guys (a scientist and manager) get here around 8:00. Everyone else is 10-10:30am. It kind of erks me because I'm in like full work mode and depend on others for some thing and I have to wait hours for them to be available
I’m the earliest on my team (~8am), then everyone else shows up between 845-930. The early morning is the best time for me to focus and get stuff done before things get busy.
@andelink It's mainly because people wait til the commute dies down. Since we are in lower queen anne some people have to commute ~1-1.5 hours so my boss is chill with wfh in the morning and commuting in when you can. we are pretty good to make sure people aren't blocked and if something is pressing we ping each-other to schedule a conf call or something.
I used to be early in the morning but I work along side with people who stay later so I usually change my times based on who I am working with in the week.
Okay that's nice people are still online and available in the morning. That would make it easier for sure
My kitten loves to walk around and hangout with us wherever we go in our apartment - bathroom included. Normally she just sits there or explores things while we do our business, but this time while I was peeing she jumped up onto the toilet bowl rim and stuck her head into my pee stream.
I just peed all over my cat.
Damn, is it free? That would be real nice to get a free haircut whenever you want.
I don't think it's free, but still super convenient; especially if the quality is good.
haha yeah, true. It looks pretty classy though. About as classy as a mobile haircut can! haha
hey guys - on a committee to try and boost company culture. bouncing on the idea of 10% time where you dedicate part of your work week on learning something new. Thinking of the bounds on how to ensure the skill is beneficial to their job. Wondering if you guys have something similar in your work? Need to build enough buy-in for LT to approve.
Not exactly the same, but we do a hackday every quarter. Do you guys have that already? It's a good way to get everyone's creative juices flowing and working with people they don't usually work with. We've also started inviting non engineers to participate since they sometimes have good ideas for helpful tools the engineers can build. We have a brainstorming activity the week before and then form groups and get two days to build something. Then we have presentations and awards the next day.
ahh - yeah that is cool. the thing is it needs to be applicable to all roles (tech and non-tech)
Ah, yeah that can be tricky. I mean we do invite the rest of the company to participate but only a few non tech people end up coming each time. They usually help with the research and surveying of potential clients to guage the interest and necessity for such a product. Or they want to start learning to program.
We have tried to push for a weekly bandwidth for learning new things, but it has always proved difficult to convince to management. We have had success with more frequent hackathons (usually quarterly). I would recommend to go this route. I actually prefer it, because I think a couple of uninterrupted days to dedicate to something new is better than a couple of hours each week.
As a side note: Ours are open to all roles. It is surprisingly beneficial to have a few non-tech roles on a hackathon team. Designers, managers, product/program managers can all play a key role for a successful hackathon project. A whole team of just engineers has its problems haha.
We published our 2018 College Salary Report today.
WWU coming in at a solid 285th place haha
Nice didn't know you guys did college reports - but it makes total sense that you do
Yeah, exactly. We have another college report we do on ROI which also has some interesting data.
Wow the military academies have the best ROI. Would not have guessed that
I guess it actually makes sense since everyone going to a military academy will end up in roughly the same job, making the same money, where as liberal arts schools get masters degrees working as baristas.
https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/9sk5zg/not_shittty_meme/?st=JNVVMR8H&sh=1bc2c20b
Do you guys follow r/badcode? If so, do you post terrible code from your coworkers there? Because I do
I wish it was more active then it is, but yeah funny anyways
I hadn't come across it either, but I have some doozies from legacy shit I've worked on
Yeah, very. Somehow, it looks like it might not be horrible though haha and I am intrigued by seeing Pokemon brought to life.
Yeah the charizard looked pretty cool tbh
hahaha i switched mine since i'll be traveling but i had to seriously bribe
nice haha. i haven't started the bribing process yet. about to look at other people's schedule to see who I can negotiate with...
I had a coworker try to pawn his on-call on me over christmas.... aint happening bub
Timelapse my coworker took from one of our 4th floor windows covering the last week of viaduct construction including the closure last Friday.
Reflection in the window during the day/night transitions is pretty bad but still fun to watch!
Not sure if you guys covered this in your CS program, but do you guys know who writes these crazy standards/protocols that everyone in the world must adhere to? Like TCP/IP, DNS, FTP, HTTP, Internet RFCs, etc. Who comes up with this stuff? Like someone just linked me this as a reference to follow for private IP space and it's super dense:
Who writes this? Who enforces it and how? Do you guys need to think about this stuff at all in your day-to-day life?
Well TCP was first implemented by the government, as was the internet.
Everything else I think just comes from research papers and what catches on.
No one enforces it. Feel free to write your own protocol. Just might not be able to use it with anything besides what you make though lol.
Yeah, it's pretty much based on standards that were set and then stuck and that we all agree to keep using because we want to be able to understand each other. It looks like IETF is a pretty active group in this space () and helped establish the protocol for HTTP/1.1 along with a couple other groups.
And yeah, we learned about these protocols in Brian's networking class but only the high level concepts really stuck with me and I wouldn't say I give them any thought in my day to day life.
hahaha i fucking love these videos. haven't seen this one yet... deploy everything to production right now!
I’m joining the lads over in West Seattle
1715 Harbor Ave SW, #200, Seattle, WA 98126
April 26th!
And kinda near alki. Over a mile walk to the beach part. Yeah right across the street from the water taxi though, excited about that
We’ve been at our current place for 2 years now. And it’s a basement with not much natural light and no office space. We no longer want to be basement dwellers with no office. Was hard to accept the price jump though
Natural light is one of those things that, as adults, turns into something to be excited about 😂 I totally agree
Whoa, you decided to make the move! Nice! Kelli and I were just wondering about your guys' house search the other day.
@spkaplan pure curiosity, what prompted this post? How did you know Kyle was moving but not know where to?
Natural light is important especially in gloomy Seattle!
Yep we’re doing it. It’s a big change for us but we’re excited. Still gonna try making it to the mariners game
I'm psychic.
... He mentioned it in the Mariner's game email thread that he was moving that day.
I'm sure your cats will like the natural light and extra space as well 👍
Yep! tbh I’m more excited for them than I am for us lol
Yeah we have two half siblings, one boy and one girl.
We didn’t always have both. We got Kona as a kitten (big sister) and then wanted her to have a playmate since Laurèn and I aren’t home most of the time. So 6 months later we got Milo, Kona’s half brother, as a kitten. They share the same Dad
Awesome view! I'll have to ride my bike down the hill and check it out when you're all settled in!
Yeah we’re moving in just in time for summer you guys will have to come check it out!
Mueller’s (redacted) report has finally been released. Reddit megathreads:
The political drama of our time
Only watched a little bit so far. I have just put it on while cooking and such. I have found some of his videos entertaining.
I will clarify ahead of time that I don’t necessarily agree with all of his opinions.
I started watching his stuff recently when looking for interview prep videos. I don't think many of his opinions are serious ones, it is just really hard to tell when he is joking, at least for me. Seems like some of his videos are complete jokes. He has good information from the industry tho, at least for someone like me who has none. And his videos can definitely be entertaining.
Some of his videos are total jokes. Others contain his legitimate opinions.
Anyone want to do the West Seattle 5k with me?
Sweet! I've already registered. It's about ~$40. Never done one of these so idk if that's a normal price or not.
It's a nice easy route, but I'm probably going to do a practice run of it this Saturday morning since I'm not used to running in the mornings if you wanna join
Nice!
Tentative plan is ~9:00am. The formal race is Alki Bathhouse to Luna Park and then back to Alki Bathhouse. But Luna Park is closer to us - about 0.7 mile away from me vs 2.2 miles to the bathhouse. So I was thinking of instead doing Luna Park to Alki Bathhouse back to Luna Park for our run. We could meet at my place and then head to Luna Park.
I didn't take into account the Gameworks event tonight where people might be up late drinking and things. We can change the Saturday plans tonight if needed, based on how we're feeling.
Let's do Sunday morning, that'd probably be better while still getting a practice run in this weekend.
@brandon Does Sunday morning work for you?
I'm mostly okay with that. I have Mother's Day plans in the middle of the day so a timely start is required for me. Should be a little cooler weather Sunday.
Someone just stole my last piece of salmon from me fish n chips straight out of the basket I was eating out of
I was walking around pike place after picking up some fish n chips. make my way back to west lake center having eaten two of my three pieces of fish during the walk. I get to west lake center and i'm enjoying the day, looking around and at the performance and then i go to grab my last piece and it's gone
i'm convinced someone snatched it while i was looking away
lol that's so ridiculous. I wonder if it was a human or animal. I'm sorry for your loss.
lol i didn't even consider it being an animal. that would be even crazier!
If any of you watch Chernobyl on HBO (great show, btw), I just discovered there is a companion podcast as well:
Hour long podcast for each episode with the shows creator diving into all the details of the episode, any backstory, and if anything was left out etc. Super interesting stuff!
I am planning to start it soon, so excited! I have heard great things.
I'm jealous of you. Honestly would wait for the season to finish before starting. I started after 3 episodes were already released and I wished I waited. It was so enthralling! Watched all three back-to-back and now have to wait each week.
I get that 😆 On the other hand, I sort of like being forced to wait and spread them out.
I certainly look forward to Mondays much more now!
Yes! So much about that whole catastrophe I had never thought about. Terrifying, but fascinating still
Honestly though, it's kind of amazing that it wasn't worse and that there haven't been other serious accidents since then. Also, I haven't seen last night's episode yet so no spoilers 🙉
It really is amazing that it wasn't worse. The show makes you aware of a several moments where it could have been so much worse than it was
For you @brandon and @spkaplan!! Next up an xtra-parenting channel lol!
lol I got that text too. Immediately disregarded... No thank you! I'll stick with cats for now.
Selling our coffee table and got this gem of a response
lol that's what i told lauren to reply with as well (it's up on her account)
For anyone who wants a dope theme for Slack, my coworker put this together:
Not sure how to switch back to what I had before. Luckily this is nice.
SAM IS @ QUALTRICS AND DIDN'T LET ME KNOW
Hahahaha @andelink I just am interviewing. I would have let you know if I had accepted a position.
@keenin I was keeping it on the DL under after the interview to keep off any additional pressure :) I was gonna hit you up at 5 to hang and/or catch up
hahaha I'm just giving you shit man... although that referral bonus would be nice to split 😜
It can take some time to go through if you read all the dialog
it is very left. good demonstration of the scale of his wealth, nonetheless
lmaaoooo hit ALT 3 times to really hack in
edit: hit CAPS LOCK 3 times for when ur hack sux
I have never seen this before lol would be a good resource for making a hacking scene in a home movie
The new slack update includes a dark mode. Preferences -> Theme -> Let your eyes relax 😌
Since working as a professional software engineer in industry for some years now, has your thoughts/opinions on the work we did with Brian changed at all? For example, I'm no software engineer but when I reflect on the time there I now wonder:
• why were we not given more guidance on data storage and modeling? i.e. why weren't we instructed to use some free db like mysql instead of letting us run wild with random pickles and TSVs everywhere? in terms of data access, control, and centralization it's the most basic
• why did brian trust any code i wrote? lol was it reviewed even once? i don't recall
Nonetheless, still an invaluable experience. Maybe the standard is to learn on your own in these sort of things
I think the fact that you ponder this and see the importance in some of these topics are possibly the reason why he gave you freedom. Not introducing bias and having you learn through different problem sets to determine what is the optimal solution.
the code review i am not sure… but I think sink or swim sometimes is a great way of learning in minimal risk env. for instance - i think it’s terrible within industry but great in academic
Yeah, I don't know why we didn't practice better storage hygiene... looking back it was a really inefficient and ugly way of doing things. I think it's just kind of the way academics do things though unfortunately. At least that's the rep they have.
I'm not sure about the code review either. Knowing Brian, he may have reviewed your code and double checked your results before publishing since it was in a version control system he had access to but it's weird that he didn't discuss that with you.
Tia that’s an optimistic outlook :) not sure if I saw the importance of these things or thought about them back then but still. Agreed having to do things on your own is the best way to learn. Although directional pointers might prevent someone from going deep in the wrong direction.
Brandon yeah definitely academia is more lax with these things. But I’ve also heard of universities provision things like redshift or Hadoop clusters for their students. This might be more for grad students at bigger schools though, idk.
There is also additional overhead with these things that might not make it worth it until a certain scale is reached.
I'll have to check it out... I really dig Onenote, but it does have it's draw backs
I saw that! InkDrop checked a few more of my boxes
Patrick Stewart is at our All Hands meeting for some reason
Yeah lol I guess the meeting was Star Trek themed so he showed up
When people do go to work during cold and icy conditions, 69% prefer to drive themselves, the survey found.
These 69% of people make absolutely no sense to me.
love these videos 😂
https://youtu.be/6_pEQtSmJDw
Even though I have seen a number of these, I am always surprised how funny they still are! 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 Somone in the Hutch Research group proposed this as a joke for some group swag
Jeez Louise. Any hope for social media to be real and verifiable?
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/02/28/tech/fake-twitter-candidate-2020/index.html
do you guys run into the problem of people ALWAYS being late to your meetings…?!
I've noticed myself being late more often since WFH. Been meaning to get a handle on it.
@brandon can you plz fix github? Been getting 504 timeouts the last 30-40 minutes
haha I'm sorry to hear that. I'll get right on it.
Do any of you use a vpn for all your personal internet use?
If I had to guess, I’d guess maybe @keenin and/or @r.taylor
If you do, what vpn do you use?
I did for a bit a few years ago. It didn't stick with me because of the loss of speed. It wasn't something that I could just turn on and forget about, especially for online gaming. It's also just putting your trust in a different third party, and most of the big VPN hosts aren't the most trustworthy atm. It also just seemed a bit pointless to have all of my internet use centralized around the big names like Google, but then make sure my use of those big names is kept private. So, I'm working on my decentralization first. Lastly, a privacy focused browser, like Firefox, covers more of the bases I care about and is a much easier change to make. In fact, Firefox just added a new feature that keeps your DNS requests private, which is one thing that a lot of VPNs failed to do that kinda ruined the whole point of them.
Thank you for the thoughtful response. Always a struggle between privacy and technological convenience/value. I should probably try out Firefox again. I don’t think I’ve used it for personal internet use (i.e. outside of work) probably since high school. And of course I keep hearing about Edge...
I also bought a VPN license a couple years ago and only used it for a bit. Too much inconvenience.
My landlord left me this in my mailbox. Just looks like a scam?
I feel bad for folks like that as well. The good intentions is nice though 🙂
What intrigues me is the publication Insider Financial Tips
I don’t know it but it’s name reads as if it’s reputable. Probably not.
haha I had a feeling he was old... that's funny that he took the time to print the web page and get it to you. Very thoughtful.
Yeah I should probably give it a good read and reply to him about it
All that filler on recipe pages is the worst
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Long form content carries a lot more weight for SEO. Just wish they would put a big fat "jump to ingredients list" button at the top.
How often do you all buy yourself new apparel (clothes, shoes, etc)?
I go in phases, usually each season I buy a few staple pieces that keep me in trend. My habits have reduced significantly. I try to only buy clothes at max 4-5x a year but it varies on events. Rules don’t apply to shoes.
Only thing I buy often is usually jeans, and active wear when things get too worn out (2x a year at max).
Growing up my family bought clothes like once per year for school. Now those habits carry for me. I wear clothes and shoes into the ground. I’ve been told I should buy clothes every couple months, which sounds like so much money to spend on clothes, and would a lot of clothing to accumulate
I usually shop for Michael or help him out and we go once a year usually
It feels like a lot. But thanks for sharing, this is a good data point
I don’t think it is a surprise that I buy clothes infrequently haha. I don’t have a schedule (e.g. yearly clothes shopping), so it is hard to guess an average how often I get new clothes. I probably add a few pieces of a particular type of clothing (shirts vs pants, vs sweatshirt) every couple of years. I wear everything until it has holes lol
Same. My schedule was from grade school now it is random / as-needed.
Although now Lauren has convinced me to try Trunk Club, which delivers me a curated set of clothing+shoes every few months. I get my first trunk later this month. We’ll see how it goes. I don’t feel the need to buy new clothes so good chance I return most of it
Software Engineer Charged in Washington with COVID-Relief Fraud <-- this is my immediate teammate. same code base. same docs. on my PRs. chatted with him on Thursday. he was arrested for fraud on Friday.
Formal prosecution complaint <-- court docs
terrible!!! not only is he an idiot but totally abusing programs that help out the 3+ million struggling
Dang I missed this!! How did it go? Not sure I'll watch 6 hours of it
They called it off at T-17 (or something close to that) due to the weather. They are trying again on may 30th
Ascendance
I’m teaching my son (14) how to use the best tools: The first assignment I gave him was to write a short essay in markdown, using vscode, and commit and push the answer in a pull request on github. I can do a code review, pointing out changes or even add my own content in a commit of my own.
These are powerful tools that everyone should be learning for writing intellectual content. The diff tools and being able to navigate change history lead to improved quality. In the same way that git gives me confidence to delete bad code, when writing an essay, I can delete low quality content. While rewriting I can see the diff changes for reference.
Of course, once you are ready to “deploy”, you will have a suitable style transformation so that the final result is a perfectly formatted document (with emphasis on excellent content).
At what age do kids embrace Markdown as the single source of truth for their documents?
lololol vote for your favorite West Seattle Island shirts @keenin
Yeah some of them are quite well done while others not so much
What is the value you see in TPMs? Just trying to get feedback from an engineer side of things. I am struggling to find this within my teams once the team maturity gets better
My TPM at Lyft is more-or-less completely absent. I don't know what he does. Sometimes he shows up to meetings sometimes he doesn't. When he does attend meetings, he doesn't have his camera on and the only things he brings up are related to how we organize things whether its our JIRA board, meeting agendas, spec review templates, etc.
This might just be specific to my current team here at Lyft. He supports other teams and initiatives as well I'm guessing he's just been more focused on those during my time here.
At Amazon the TPM was more involved in shaping our work and roadmap and also fielded requests from stakeholders.
I like TPMs when they do the shit for the team that I don't like doing. e.g. communicating with stakeholders, meeting notes, follow-ups and check-ins, detailed requirement gathering and use-case defining. Basically make it so I can hard-skill more and soft-skill less.
Would love to know yours and others thoughts.
I also appreciate when they can flex the technical part of their title/role and welcome their contributions/questions in design and architecture discussions as well as in low-level implementation stuff
Yeah so I approach being a TPM as
I get really deep in the weeds - and most TPMs basically get to a point where it becomes too technical and defer to others
Yeah, I agree with Kyle's definition of what they should be doing. Basically guiding the teams direction. They interface with the customer and decide what the priority is. And then it's generally the tech managers/leads job to decide how much work can be chewed on at once and how the task will be accomplished.
I am trying but I am hitting a wall in what I can do to improve. I have a 1:1 with my boss about this - I think I am just trying to build more ownership.
I also am in a really political org and heavy on program side of things. AKA a wiki for decisions, a wiki for risks, a status update, operation reviews with leadership, and scrum of scrums across TPMs.
AKA most of it is status updates and I don’t see value. I want to just build shit
I’ve figured how to automate some stuff. I figured out how to shape the team to build ownership and be accountable (hence the team maturity piece).
I also appreciate a TPM who is good at protecting the devs and deflecting work that we can't or won't do. Having those tough conversations and stuff. A good TPM always makes me feel safe from the outside (non technical) business world lol
I think I am just waiting for this promotion (I am suppose to get?? — covid…) and maybe see if I should go to a different team or problem space.
Yeah good point Brandon. I basically go to these awful 2 hour meetings on strategy that go in circles and once I sort it out - then I act and engage with the team. I dont pass on half baked stuff
I try and not pull engineers in meetings when it is something I should be able to speak to myself
I think engineers time get abused … but I also think engineers are super lazy
If teams can shift accountability a bit — then engineers can reduce their meeting time
All of that is valuable stuff. It might not be the type of work to scratch the technical/engineering itch you seem to have, but it's valuable
Yeah. The team intern thanked me for my admin help which really got to me also. I could just have a chip on my shoulder
Anyways - thanks for your perception and the validation.
I just wanted to see how other companies / teams view the role
Maybe Blind can offer some more perspective from companies other than ours:
https://www.teamblind.com/search/tpm
LOL- just had my 1:1. I just got promoted
I am one of the FEW who was promoted this year. Due to covid…. we do not have any mid-year promotions
That's especially impressive then blob-clap
I have my performance review and rewards discussion later this month. Hoping for a similar conversation with my manager!
For anyone following, I got the promotion this afternoon 🙂
Thanks guys! 😁 Trying to do research and decide whether I should be attempting to negotiate now 🤔
Is negotiating your comp increase from a promo a thing folks do? I don't hear too much about that. Worth trying, but unless you have leverage (i.e. have an external offer you're willing to leave msft for) I'd be surprised if they bump up your comp beyond what their system spits out. I think these things are purely formulaic.
You should try though for sure and report back how it goes. Good luck!
Do people do this? I really borked my promo if so
The consensus among articles on the internet is that it can't hurt, but don't get your hopes up. If you think you are making a bigger impact than you can make an argument for it. I'm glad to hear that it's not an obvious thing I should be trying to do though. I was afraid I would be making a mistake by not pushing for a negotiation. Curious what others thoughts are on the subject.
Also, did you already get promoted at Lyft or are you referring to previous promos at Amazon?
What I've heard aligns with Kyle. If you don't have leverage, they don't have much reason to give you more than the standard increase. Unfortunately... :(
Ok, I guess that makes sense. My manager has already been pretty cool and supportive about getting me the level increase so quickly so I probably shouldn't rock the boat. I guess I was just hoping for a couple more percentage points but I'm guessing it varies a lot based on the type of promo. This was a level increase, but not a title change. I bet a title change carries a lot more weight.
You could at least ask what room is there for talking about it
Ask them how the increase is determined and then report back
Due to the climate at Expedia I do not think I have this power right now
very different - I think for the better. I like new CEO and the way we are progressing but given the travel climate it makes me weary. Our market is not international and we all know how the US is right now in terms of travel.
I'm sorry to hear that :/ good news about the ceo though. Mark was the worst haha
CONGRATS TO @spkaplan OFFICIALLY A HUSBAND 🥂 ?!
Awww thanksl you guys! Congrats to @brandon and @kellikatzer as well!!!!!! 🍾
How do you all justify upgrading your car(s) ie getting a newer car? I’m driving an old fully paid off 2005 Hyundai Accent GT with ~130k miles on it. It drives fine, but lacks modern amenities and safety features. I drive maybe once a week to the grocery store. But lately I’ve taken longer road trips over the summer and it’s those that make me wanna get a newer car. And whenever I see what people in my social circle drive I feel a bit of that “keeping up with the jones” thing.
But cars are expensive I just can’t rationalize dropping $10k+ for such little use. Is there a way to get cars on the cheap or for it to be economical?
The only car worth buying imo is a Tesla but I can justify that even less
Too many bad experiences with less dependable cars! lol I've been stuck on the pass too many times. It's nice to have at least one car with modern features that is fun to take on trips and stuff but it's definitely a sunk cost that keeps on costing when you factor in insurance. After we moved, it made sense to have two cars because we were both commuting but now I wonder if I should get rid of one because we hardly ever need both in quarantine.
Tesla's are cool, but I think you can find a nice middle ground if you do some research.
Getting stuck somewhere would definitely do it for me lol
I was hoping to spend $5k on a car, but looking at car prices really shot down that dream
I like that one as well. I also like Subaru’s but I feel like everyone has a Subaru
Yeah, I mean you kind of get what you pay for but here are a couple of options. You could also visit a used car dealership but you have to be ready to negotiate.
That is a toughy for sure. I have been spending a lot of time thinking about the general topic, because Steph and I have gotten by on 1 car for 3 years living together, but are thinking about getting a 2nd in the near future for when she goes back to the office eventually and I am keep working remotely.
Coincidentally, we are actually leaning towards a Tesla. I agree that it is becoming more and more difficult to justify buying a gas car. EVs are definitely still expensive and haven't gotten to the price point that it is a no-brainer. My thought process has been:
* Better for the environment
* MUCH less maintenance (saves time and money)
* Safest cars made
* Definitely paying for the fun factor
Anyway...hopefully that stream of consciousness is helpful haha
If I were going to buy another gas car, it would be a Honda, Toyota, or mazda, for the reliability and subsequently decreased total cost of ownership.
Nice finds @brandon! Gotta be automatic though 😆 Those sub $5k ones catch my eye for sure. The 2007 is a little old though. The 2012 has $253k miles otherwise a great price. Perfect price. So good. I wonder how many miles is too many...
Subarus are great for snow and tougher conditions, but just like performance cars, they aren't as optimized for reliability and are more expensive to repair. But, they are really fun to drive. They feel like driving a low profile tank haha
@spkaplan the biggest draw for a tesla is the safety imo. i hate driving and get so nervous when lauren and/or I have to drive somewhere far. It's so dangerous. Driving is not a safe activity so safety is definitely a big draw for me
It's so hard for me to ignore the safety features of a tesla. like yeah it's expensive, but how much am I willing to pay for my life? My life isn't worth an extra few thousand dollars? Once I get into trading $ and safety features you can just take my money
You make a really good point about safety. Thinking about it like that is hard to argue against. Your life is indeed worth a lot :)
There are other cars that have those safety features. You aren't going to find them for less than 10k though 😆 Kelli's sister has a subaru with all of the self driving, stay in your lane, auto stop collision avoidance features installed. They just had to pay for the premium model.
@brandon oh really? that is news to me. goes to show how ignorant i am of cars and how easily hype can influence me.
Even with safety "features" aside, Tesla makes the safest vehicles. They are the safest vehicles ever tested by the NHTSA. Also, Tesla will crack fsd, which is the ultimate safest feature. Also, any EVs traction control is safer than what any gas car can offer, due to the limitations of internal combustion engines
I was really impressed by their safety ratings I saw on their site yesterday
@spkaplan tell me about home charging though. that's gotta be a hurdle for a lot of folks right? what's that cost?
@andelink You’d want to look into your options at your rental. Once you own, you have lots more freedom.
There are a few charging options. Every Tesla comes with a “Mobile Connector” with adapters to plug into 120v outlets (only something like 4 miles of charge per hour), and other outlet types (like those used for washers and dryers, that can offer up to 28 miles of charge per hour). You can also have an electrician install a “Wall Connector” sold for 500$ which will charge at 44 miles of range per hour. We will likely skip the Wall Connector, and just install a NEMA 14-50 outlet (a clothes dryer outlet), which yieleds the 28 miles per hour.
Thankfully, Steph’s dad is an electrician, so we will save on the installation cost.
Mobile Connector:
Wall Connector:
At 28 mrph charging rate, that’s 224 miles you’d get over night in 8 hours.
Very convenient that your FIL is an electrician!
adapters to plug into 120v outletsIs this the standard outlet type seen in everywhere? Like the ones in my living room?
Oh nice. It is at least feasible then to charge at my place without additional investment in the home
Correct. However, you will only get something like 30 miles of charge overnight in 8 hours. All depends on your usage of the car
Suboptimal for sure. But my average weekly mileage is 2 miles. For longer trips I can plan ahead to ensure I'm gassed up
Yeah it's great haha but does make it harder to justify buying a new car. Also clothes. Makes it hard to justify buying new clothes.
hahaha I couldn’t agree more about it being more difficult to buy new things. My clothes rotation has shrunk since working from home. Still clean clothes, but I don’t feel like I need the same amount of variety as before
They position them strategically for long trips/commutes I think, but I would like to see them to put more in cities in the future
I think they figure you have home charging, and then use super chargers when driving long distances
Also, I imagine moe stores and restraunts, etc… will install chargers as EVs become more and more common. It will become a standard for many stores to have chargers.
Definitely will become ubiquitous as time goes on
You asked about the cost of charging.
From a quick google search, based on national average electricity cost: 3.6 cents per mile to charge a Tesla model 3.
Based on this, if you are paying $3 per gallon, and get 30 mpg, it is 10 cents per mile
The big money saver is cost of maintenance. Electric cars have SO many fewer moving pieces, fewer belts, fluids, etc… so they require so much less maintenance. No oil changes, no timing belts to wear down, regenerative breaking reduces wear on the break pads, the list goes on and on…
Model 3 comes out ahead for the total cost of ownership over 5 years against Toyota Camry, which is one of the lowest cost of ownership cars out there. Granted this is new, so of course a used car will still come out ahead 🙂
Love the total cost of ownership analysis blob-clap
Check out this post! "Which company has the most advanced self driving vehicle tech? (Auto Industry)"
https://us.teamblind.com/s/eJwtJTyy
But I guess maybe not. Different objectives I think
The largest distinction I have heard is that everyone is using Lidar and geofencing, which isn’t true self-driving. Tesla is using vision/radar and no geo-fences. I will read the links you sent, b/c I am always up for more info!
Correction: Lidar doesn’t make it non-full-self-driving. Lidar will make it quicker to get to l3/l4, but near impossible to get to l5. Lidar can’t tell the difference between a boulder and a plastic bag in the road.
Geofencing makes it not full self driving. Another company may get fsd working in a geo fence before tesla, but tesla is solving the problem in such a way that they will unlock all geographies at once. This is Elon’s theory at least.
Speaking of the muskrat, I’m looking forward to the Neuralink demo on Friday:
https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/26/21402240/neuralink-august-2020-event-brain-machine-interface-working-demonstration
I hadn’t heard about this demo!! I’m totally watching 👀
I saw some headlines about it, but haven’t read more into it. I put it on my reading list 🙂
Great clip from Tesla’s Autonomy Day last year. This is the section from their computer vision lead, talking about why cameras are better than Lidar. And Elon shits on lidar at the beginning of the video haha
Saved to my youtube watch later playlist. Gotta find time to get some work done for a bit lol
Great clip from Tesla’s Autonomy Day last year. This is the section from their computer vision lead, talking about why cameras are better than Lidar. And Elon shits on lidar at the beginning of the video hahaYo Elon seems to really be struggling to talk here
I'm sure but I'm not a big fan of sped up audio/video. I do speed up some podcasts though like JRE
I have gotten too used to watching videos sped up, now I can't stand 1x haha.
Honestly that sounds preferable if you can just get used to it
@spkaplan back to this topic...
I don't think I'd buy a car brand new given the depreciation and all that. But what about Tesla? Do they have unique benefits with buying new that you're aware of?
Tesla is the first car I have ever considered buying new. All Teslas as of a couple of years ago, definitely all Model 3's and Model Y’s are being built with robotaxis in mind. Meaning Tesla wants to use them in their planned robotaxi network. To back this up, Tesla is not allowing customer to buy their Model 3's after the cusomter’s lease ends, b/c Tesla wants to get the car back and use them as robotaxis. This is how far ahead they are thinking and how confident they are of FSD. It is crazy, I know. This mean they are already building their cars to run for ~1 million miles, b/c a taxi that falls apart after 200-300k like a normal car miles isn’t worth it. This already his a HUGE value proposition to the customer.
SO, with all that said, a Tesla will last SO much longer than a normal car. You might ask about the battery. Looking at battery degradation trends, by the time your battery is so degraded you need a new one (which is at least 200-300k from what I’ve read), I bet they will have made it easy to switch in a new battery for much less than buying a new car.
In addition to that, Tesla’s continue to get better and better with over the air (OTA) updates. Tesla;' customers rave about how cool it is their car gets better when they get in their car in the morning for their morning commute. It is a computer, so Tesla can do obvious things like upgrade the UI, etc… but have proven they can also improve the car’s performance, braking distance and even range with OTA updates. This will be a force working against normal depreciation.
In addition to software, Tesla continues to make auto manufacturing breakthroughs that no other legacy automaker is doing. For example, their giga press. This is unheard of. Just this one specific manufacturing change is enabling them to make their cars cheaper, faster, but most importantly safer and more reliable. They will continue to make improvements like this that no other car company is making.
If my Tesla shares give me enough of a return to buy a Tesla, I'll do it
I should disclose that we just bought a Tesla last week. Should be ready in late Sept.
But I would have said all of the same things above regardless. I am basically just regurgitating what I have learned about Tesla from reading and watching youtube.
We knew we wanted a 2nd car for when Steph invetibly has to go back to the office, but I stay up here. And we were debating between a used gas car or a new electric. We were worried in a few years we’d regret buying a gas car, so we took the leap
Agreed I would feel weird buying internal combustion engine
We definitely acknowledged that some of our purchase was for the fun factor
As long as you don't move to a dirty electricity place like Kentucky or something you should be doing good for the environment
Very good point 🤔 The source of the electricity is important. As solar/wind becomes cheaper than gas/coal, it will become the predominate source of electricity
The name Adam Ozimek is new to me. I will have to check him out. I have always been in the “only spend 5k-15k on a car” camp, and I do still consider myself part of it.
A few reasons why I deviated this time:
idk who that guy is. someone shared that tweet with me.
I don't agree with his numbers used, but I agree with the spirit of his message
And ultimately if you enjoy cars then the financial side doesn't matter as much. hobbies / life > $$$$ (within reason)
I agree he is probably using hyperbole w.r.t. his numbers, but I agree with his general message indeed.
Many people have no balance and spend everything they have and more. I believe his message is more for folks in this situation.
It is definitely a tradeoff. I could reach FI more quickly not buying a tesla, but its a calculated expense.
MMM has a very similar message as Adam about buying cars.
Model YDid you get long-distance option or performance mode option?
Of course there are no right and wrong answers. I am just trying to explain our thought process
I haven't done it. But if I were ordering a Model Y, I'd do the same
That sounds tempting to me as a sort of future-proofing measure
Does Tesla offer the loan? I see that option through their ordering site
Yep. Steph wanted one for a potential future small trailer. I think you can install one in the future if you want though. Would double check that though
Tesla doesn’t finance it themselves, but they will do the work of securing the loan for you. We did it, b/c it was crazy convenient and they got 2.5%, which from what I had read is currently considered pretty low. Wouldn’t hurt to shop around
I like the metallic color (+$1k) with the induction wheels (+$2k). I don't know how the induction wheels impact performance, but I like the look.
We just did the white with stock wheels. I would love the blue or red though 😍
It's a bummer that the colors cost an extra $1k
@andelink In case you’re interested. Following up… got the model y ~2 weeks ago. Couldn’t be happier so far.
Yo this right here is a game changer. Never had Limoncello before but let me tell you it’s what you need
I have been a sucker for waterloo water lately. It’s a pricey penny but our favorite!
Waterloo water? I’ve never heard of it but now I wanna try it
I was looking into some code trying to break down the problem so I can explain it to product managers and I was disgusted by the code. First off, the class had so many responsibilities I couldnt even tell what it was trying to achieve. Now I am not an engineer anymore but this was straight spaghetti code… I showed my boyfriend and he said it was pretty ugly but that this is not as bad as he thought….
I was shocked by this. Is it common to see some bandaid / legacy code that just has increased over time it is known as a lost cause for a refactor???
Is it common to see some bandaid / legacy code that just has increased over time it is known as a lost cause for a refactor???imo, yes
this happens. Depends on the priorities of the manager whether they value longevity/maintainability
Got the Airpods Pro this morning as a gift for Lauren. I already had them
Look at this guy's career progression:
Got promoted nearly every year during his ~10 years at Google, from SWE II --> Principal SWE / Director of Engineering mindblown
Have you ever seen your director push code regularly? This guy is my director now, having joined Lyft 2-3 weeks back, and puts out 1-2 PRs per day each morning. I've never seen a director code so much
Wow, that is very impressive. He must just live and breathe code (and documentation).
Anyone oncall and get screwed by the AWS Kinesis outage from Wed to last night?
I managed to abstain completely this year 🙂 how about you?
I honestly just couldn’t come up with any purchase I had been thinking about, so I skipped it as well this year
I was gonna start tomorrow. But my annoying teammate is making me consider starting today
I'm working today, interacting with my teammate, and he is the worst. He's not asking me to reschedule. I am considering taking the rest of the day off because of how annoying he is.
I'm in the middle of changing teams but I volunteered to help out the old team during the remaining part of the year and I'm starting to think it's not worth it. I will stop helping because of him. The worst.
So I joined a team on Dec 7th, but the day I joined they announced the team was being ended the project shut down. So I've been looking for a new team since then, and helping out with my old team stuff to remain productive. I'm leaning towards the Telematics team right now but it's the holidays so nothing is happing until start of the new year
That includes the weekends on each end. yeah, I am really enjoying it. Doing lots of projects to stay busy…painting, ripping out more carpet
Lol, that is unfortunate timing with that other team. I hope another team pans out for you
Yes, I do need to get away from this teammate. That's why I'm leaving. He's the worst.
Yeah, hoping to be basically done with interior projects altogether soon. The list is getting short.
It sucks that 1 person can have that large of a negative affect
catching up on all these messages. Expedia gave everyone the 23rd - Jan 4th off and since everyone already had extra vacation people started taking off since the 18th. I personally started the 22nd and go back the 4th!
Has anyone used Buy Online Pickup Curbside for groceries? I'm thinking of trying it just as a time saver.
Is that a company? Or is that like store specific like the Safeway app/site for Safeway etc
Sorry for the confusion...shouldn't had capitalized it. I am just referring to any service like that from any grocery store.
Will do. I see people lined up in their cars at Fred Meyers waiting for their grocers to be brought out to them, so it got me thinking.
I'll have to check out Tech Meme Ride Home, Citations Needed, and Acquired.
It changes for me over time. In no particular order:
* All-in (also available on youtube)
* Against the Rules
* Armchair Expert
* Embedded
* Partially Derivative (no longer being created)
* Revisionist History
* The Dollop
* JRE
Dope I’ve been looking for new podcasts this list will be good to dive into
Awesome! They are all pretty different, so hopefully you find something you like
Has anyway given All-In Podcast a try? I continue to love this podcast.
Interesting. Is there a lot of poker talk? I’m not familiar with the hosts
No, it's not about poker thankfully. It is 4 friends who started a podcast during covid, since they couldn't play poker together. They talk about things going on in the world (usually around politics or tech) (covid, elections, tech acquisitions like Salesforce buying slack, IPOs like coinbase, tech breakthroughs like alphafold) The episode titles highlight what they talk about in each episode, so you can get an idea of what they talk about. They happen to be 4 silicon valley tech investors, 3 of whom are immigrants, they have a history building and selling their own start ups, working for companies such as google and Facebook, etc.. You might have heard of Chamath Palihapitiya, since he is the one doing all of the SPACs recently. They just generally have thoughtful conversations about what's going on in the world and i think they do a good job viewing things from multiple angles.
Hmm that sounds like conversations I’d enjoy! I like that they seem more long form. Will give it a listen!
Yeah I think they're something around 90min on average. I definitely have come to like long form conversations as well.
They are reviewing a power point. Is there a video companion to the podcasts?
I liked the inflation episode I listened to! Looking forward to the next
i take this back - I just started listening to a music podcast and I enjoyed it
i guess time for a life update -- like many 2020 was challenging. (see thread for details)
I went through a tough breakup with Michael a few months ago. I also had to move (to a different part of Chicago) during a pandemic. On top of that ... during the year we actually got a dog and when we split we had to make the tough call to find her a new home. With both of our jobs we would just be taking her to daycare more than spending time with her and ultimately it was really hard. But she is not with a family who loves her and a better environment for her.
As for me, I am doing okay. Honestly comes in waves and just taking the energy to build myself back up and grow. I have been picking up lots of hobbies and have a great support system around me.
Thought i'd share with more friends. But, as I move forward I am really grateful for growth and hopeful that things will be alright.
Thanks for reading my novel. Hope we can all get together one day and grab beers again.
Until then, i'm always a virtual call away. I also am down for some games so give me a holler!
I am really sorry to hear about your breakup, the move and having to re-home your pup, and all during Covid. I can't imagine what that must have been like. It must have taken immense strength. Knowing you, I have no doubt you will stay strong and build yourself back up.
So sorry Tia, that’s a lot of hardship all at once. Good to hear you are picking up hobbies and have support and are finding ways to build yourself back up again. That would be so hard during covid.
Yeah the more I think about it and the more people I talk to, I realize it's probably way more difficult with covid. But thanks for the kind words. I am staying strong and just taking this time to grow and help push me forward.
One thing I have been doing is running - ended up doing 6 miles the other day and aiming for a goal of 10 in 2021
Nice running helps with everything in life and six miles is fantastic! I’ve only peaked at 5 I need to get serious with it again
Not sure if anyone has been feeling a bit exhausted after yesterday. I thought i'd share this to help us add a break and hopefully remember connection to people and places.
Anyone tried https://gather.town/ ? Seems like a fun idea but wondering how well it plays out in practice
ha, it was in my drafts. I wrote it and never sent it. Figured better late than never 😄
yooooooo have any of you heard of RocketReach? I just stumbled upon it by Googling a former colleagues name. I then searched my name and it lists some of my emails both professional and personal!! It has my legit Amazon and Lyft emails 😡 Not all of the emails are mine/correct and it doesn't have my actual personal email I use today but still I'm unhappy with the emails of mine it does make publicly available.
Literally today I was venting to Lauren about how I've been getting a bunch of recruiter mail directly to my Lyft email inbox and I don't understand how these people have my email. This explains it...
They also have my phone number and social media accounts...
But it's weird because it doesn't have my current primary personal email, which I put on my LinkedIn for anyone to see...
Some info is redacted/hidden until you pay, but if you pay you get all the loot.
----
jckbauerfan@hotmail.com -- my middle school email I can't login to anymore
kyle_andelin@symantec.com -- not mine
kandelin@lyft.com -- my lyft email
kylea@amazon.com -- not mine
kyle@amazon.com -- not mine
andelink@amazon.com -- my amazon email
andelin@amazon.com -- not mine
meesaandelin@yahoo.com -- one of my moms old emails, no longer used
They even allow/encourage people to submit information that they are missing e.g. if i felt like betraying any of you I could provide your actual contact info and they would happily accept it
Am I the only one surprised by the info they have and how accessible they make it to anyone?
I found all yours without paying anything. But I paid for a one-month subscription to see what they got. So let me know if you want to look anyone/anything up and I can hook it up 🪝 🆙
Is this why I have been getting a bunch of spam and junk emails lately??
Like I knew that it was our info was out there and collected/organized by companies but I did not expect it to be so easily available and presented publicly to willing buyers. No shame in what they do. Thought this shit would be hidden behind the scenes somehow
At least it helped me find my dads long lost LinkedIn LOL
Do your companies/teams use k8s for your compute ie do all your services run on kubernetes?
Do you manage/provision your infra and deploys?
more context: we use k8s in all “newer” environments that we deploy our service. We run ~40 instances of our service in different prod envs. Some use k8s, others are old and don’t. I haven’t worked much on the k8s envs yet. Our team is large so it takes a while to make it around to work on everything.
About your question: yes. There are other teams that host and manage Spinnaker, which we use to deploy our service on k8s in aws.
Hmm Spinnaker. I haven't heard of that. Will give it a googley
It is just a CD solution…not really relevant to your question about k8s
I like to stay up on the hippity and happenin latest and greatest
k8s is the new new for expedia so new things built using and lots migrating.
@andelink I can’t remember if we talked about this before…so pardon me if we already did. Is there any talk inside Lyft about its contingency plan if someone else solves autonomy first and/or if someone else is able to offer autonomous rides for less than Lyft can? I imagine there are interesting ideas. I wonder the same thing for Uber, but of course no one at Uber is here 🙂
Haha well of course 👉 but I have been scheming on this for ~6 months now 😉
I hadn’t thought to ask if there is any internal talk w/in Lyft/Uber about this possible outcome 💡
That is one outcome I think is possible. tesla has made very strategic acquisitions in the past for certain things, however they have never acquired software (as far as im aware) since they build allllll software in house (even their enterprise software)
So I guess it is a tradeoff between speed and the desire to build inhouse.
So you @andelink (at the IC level) have info about future strategic moves at the company level that are not public?
honestly, i would go to whichever grocery store has self-driving carts. huge market opportunity :grinningfacewithstareyes:
Yea! Will they be able to put groceries in the cart automatically as well?
Other options:
@keenin i missed seeing your commentary

Can you believe it I feel like such a weirdo to the Spotify masses
What do you mean? Apple Music is great. That's why I use it lol I like it so much better than Spotify
If you aren't in the Apple ecosystem then the experience is not as good
I feel like there is a whole population that have used Spotify since when it came out or got popular before other music streaming alternatives were decent competitors and now that's their life
I like Bronze Whale for working as well. I’m listening to this right meow:
https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/JN4ZN4EjBBraia6t8
lol i totally am on the apple ecosystem except safari and apple music and maps
Oh alright. What about Spotify do you prefer over Apple Music? Have you tried Apple Music recently?
I've never used Apple Music so I cannot give a fair assessment. Features I enjoy is the curation, matching and infamous Spotify Wrapped
Fair enough, I only tried it initially because Lauren had been using it
What is “matching” in this context?
I like Apple Music for its UI/UX, it’s more library management than Spotify, it’s integration to the rest of the Apple ecosystem, it’s human-curated playlists, and the ability for me to upload my personal music that Apple Music doesn’t have already - making it available for streaming from all my devices as if it was on Apple Music. There are a lot of mixtapes that aren’t available on AM or Spotify because they aren’t official label releases, but since I can upload them to my iCloud music library they are available for streaming via AM.
I’ve never really liked the ML music curation/recommendations from Spotify or AM. I don’t think it’s as good as human-curated playlists so that aspect of Spotify isn’t a big factor for me.
Also the dark green I don’t like
AM also pays artists more $/stream, which wasn't a factor for me originally tbh but now I can cite that as a warm and fuzzy
Matching meaning here are some artists you might like in the discover tab. I get why you like AM - I just don't ever upload my own stuff so that's why I don't use it plus I do like the similar artists feature so I can expand my discovery.
Gotcha. I wonder how it compares to the AM discovery feature. It’s very anti-tech of me to have faith in any of these automated suggestions lol
New album vibes for today https://music.apple.com/us/album/collapsed-in-sunbeams-deluxe/1535799044
Is anyone here a Clubhouse user and willing to send me an invite?
It's so true 😆 Everyone is finally becoming aware of him or at least aware of his abilities now that Tesla is widely seen as a success.
Fun home owner shit... Our well pressure tank failed...$3700 later we have running water again 😭
Add me when you do it and we can compare genetics LOL
Lauren and I just did it. We are confirmed not related, so that felt good
Will do!
I will want to read up on the privacy aspect of it first. Any insight you can share on that?
Yes definitely should be comfortable with sending your most sensitive data. It’s super tight privacy wise. At least I think from what I read. What do you wanna know about specifically?
What do you wanna know about specifically?I would simply want a guarantee that they will never provide my data to another company. Just being defensive of my data, since we don’t yet know if it could be used against you in the future (e.g. insurance companies jacking up your premiums b/c you are more likely to get a disease that is costly to treat).
@spkaplan I gave them pets mission to use my anonymized dna for research and share it for such purposes
Edit: pets mission lol permission
I want to read up on it more. Everything I am saying is coming from a place of basically 0 research :)
Yes the good lord has blessed me today
i'm in the stage of life where I am excited for protein powder to be shipped.
Where my dessert is Greek yogurt, protein powder, almond butter, cinnamon, and blueberries
lol when greek yogurt is either a sweet or sour. My brother uses it as a sour cream replacement
lol, probably seems random. I have always wanted to understand electricity at a basic level but never got around to it. What finally got me to look it up: going to be doing a lot of rewiring in our house w/ Steph’s dad who is an electrician. Our house has a lot of “knob and tube” wiring, which is an old method for wiring. The down side is that it is not safe to insulate around it, as it increases the likihood of fire. So, we want to replace it, so we can insulate more. At the same time, we are running more wiring upstairs, so we can add a heat source, since the upstairs isn’t serviced well by the furnace that heats the rest of the house.
We thought this is a good time to do it, since we are also in the middle of replacing the flooring upstairs. If we have to put holes in the floor to access wiring, better to do it before the new flooring is down
rewiring our bathroom lighting and installing new fixtures was my first project here. baby scale compared to you but learned a bit. pretty fun
I am just learning as I go. Everything up until now has been aesthetic. The wiring is the first serious thing, hense why I have steph’s dad to do the real work
definitely. having an electrician in the family is super handy
Circuitry was the topic of my senior project in high school so I knew all of this lingo once upon a time. Probably won't relearn it until I have a real project to apply it to like this. Sounds exciting! And also like a lot of work 😅
We take it slowly. Work a little bit here and there. Some evenings and some on weekends.
Anyone ever used (or done background research) on Metromile before? My car insurance plan with Progressive is up for renewal and I got an ad in the mail for Metromile which offers a pay per mile plan instead of fixed rate. It seems attractive given that I'm not driving much these days.
I've heard of it, but never done any research. Let me know what you find.
My manager was the former VP of Engineering at Metromile what do you wanna know
The rates seem great given you are in one of their supported locations, just want to make sure there are no red flags.
Seems like they have some negative reviews regarding customer service but I can probably live with that. Any juicy scandals? Lol
lol i'll ask next time we're at a happy hour together
Sure, not sure how to format it though since it's the sum of a bunch of different coverage options that may differ depending on your insurance preferences. Let me try breaking it down real quick. Gotta switch to desktop.
Curious how this compares to other's current rates. If one of us is getting ripped off, let's work together to find out!
Also, curious what you guys think of my policy coverage choices and deductibles. Now is my opportunity to make adjustments so let's talk insurance 🥳
Kelli and I are both insured under the policy.

Teslas are the safest cars 😎
And that is even with an “accident” on my record in the last 3 years…I nicked a parked car in a parking lot lol
Nice lol I have similar coverage but it’s a lot more expensive for my 15 year old car
It is weird how that works. I guess it is similar to health insurance…the older you get the more you pay
Yeah older car with less/no modern safety features means I’m (i) more likely to get in an accident and (ii) more likely to get seriously injured in an accident
Wow, your rates are a lot cheaper than mine. I mean your deductible is higher, but still! I don't think I have any recent dings on my record either. Why is the honda fit not more comparable?
I imagine most of it is due to deductibles. I can’t think of any other reason besides deductibles and locations 🤷 Can you try increasing your deductibles without actually making the change and see if your quote goes down?
Changing my deductibles to the highest possible option (same as you) only decreased my cumulative 6mo premium by $69 😡
What's your philosophy on those deductibles choices? My thought process was that it only takes one insurance claim for the lower deductible to pay for itself but maybe I shouldn't assume I'm going to be making a claim 😅
However, when it only decreases my 6mo premium by $69, I'm tempted to just get the better policy so that an accident doesn't rock the financial boat as much.
Hmm yeah, 69$ doesn't seem like enough of a difference to be worth it
Here's my final Metromile policy update. I chatted with support this morning about my rate because it went up slightly after moving. Turns out, they were actually able to lower it a lot because I was previously insured (no lapse in coverage). I guess the initial application didn't pick that up for some reason? Glad I asked!
My landlord got spooked about the market and has decided to sell all of her properties. She just gave us 2 months notice on Saturday. FML 😛 Good news is we acted quickly and toured several places over the weekend. We already went through the whole process a bit over a year ago so we knew what we were looking for and we found something we liked yesterday (although I really love our current place and think we scored an awesome deal so it's hard to beat). Signed a new lease this afternoon, guess I'm moving this month thisisfine
Wow that started out terrible and ended positively lol how nice
Yeah, I wouldn't say nice necessarily lol I still have to pack all of my shit in boxes and relocate. The new place is slightly smaller (but also less expensive 🥳) so we'll probably need to get rid of some furniture and stuff which will be a pain.
But yeah, we found a good new spot. We like the way the space is allocated and it feels clean and fresh. We also got lucky because the previous tenants were moving from California but backed out before they moved in so the listing had just gone back up at a slightly lower price.
@spkaplan yeah, unfortunately. We were on a 12 month lease for 2020 but then it rolled into month to month starting in January. We had a good relationship with our landlord though and when we moved in she seemed happy that our plan was to stay for a couple years because she wouldn't have to deal with finding new tenants for a while. She felt really bad and wrote us this letter and everything along with the notice to vacate. Still doesn't change the fact that she did it though! Hard not to be upset with her but we're just trying to roll with the punches.
That is a bummer, sorry to hear that. I guess for future, would be good to get a lease for the 2nd year. Glad to hear you're making the most of it though.
She has offered to sell it to us but we're not really interested since it's not the type of home we're looking for longer term. We'd have to be ready for volatility and possibly hunker down for a while based on the market. It's also pretty expensive just because of the location.
@spkaplan Yeah, lesson learned I suppose. If we asked for a 12 month extension we might have at least found out earlier that she was considering selling. If she was unwilling to give us the extension that would be telling.
Yeah or if she gave you the extension and then she wanted to break the lease you could ask for some $$$.
All said and done, I hope your new place is awesome and you, the move goes smoothly, and you and Kelli settle in quickly :)
haha the part at the end where they showed a couple clips of Obama was definitely there to trigger people 😆
Alright, that's all of the attention I can give this without feeling like I am negatively contributing to trending stats lol
That's exactly it. IKEA discontinued their print catalog and then published this audio catalog so people can get a digital fix
lol i think they did this as a one-off without plans to update it or maintain it going forward
maybe they have like some sort of newsletter already, idk. i haven't opened their app in a while but you can browse their catalog there
i feel it. fingers crossed a DC doesn't go down 🤞
it's not even my teams rotation. i volunteered to help them out. it was a light oncall they said 😢
To make you feel better, our team’s shit has been on fire for the last 2 weeks
The life of an engineer... I'm actually really glad to not have on-call duties for my current position. But, I was still online until 9pm earlier this week hotfixing a deployment so not much better.
My product doesn't have any active users 😆 It's in the "prototype/feedback loop" phase 😛
It's actually very frustrating as a developer not to have active users. I mean our clients test the tool, but not in a production kind of way. There's no built in stress testing or easy way to A/B test feature ideas. It was a lot of fun knowing people were always surfing our pages at PayScale and we could gain insights from that and test their reactions to different UX in real time.
It looks like one of those placeholder sites for an unused domain. There are links for "free mvies to watch", online film school, and helicopter rides? And the site isn't running https/ssl. Maybe it works, but I've seen much more legit vaccine location finders. Just sayin...
Update - just got mine today!!! next one is May 2nd. Honestly i’ve been seeing people go to Yakima for Seattle
Yeah Yakima is handing them out to anyone since folks over there just aren’t vaccinating
Been thinking about making the drive
Oh they advertise as "Free SMS Verification Code Bypass Service"
But then they put all the usage of it on the site!!
It's not that bad as long as the text doesn't also have your other account info.
I dare you to use one of the authentication codes you see and log in with it.
I dont necessarily understand the question or confusion. It's just a public phone number for confirmation codes. There are similar things for email. Doesn't present any security threat really, as Keenin just said
I guess I was initially surprised to see those codes there
Like why wouldn't you want Amazon or Paypal to have your phone number?
Paypal?? They have access to your payment information (as does Amazon) but you're worried about them having your phone number?
Didn't you just say you're using it for ordering something that you presumably paid for?
It’s now deactivated after the payment was processed
Well some people have similar feelings as you but for the big companies, they may do the same thing for Amazon orders. May also just not have their own phone number or something.
True true I need to remember my privilege of owning a phone
I mean clearly I’m the odd one out not those people using the service. They exist in mass so much so this service exists
Yeah... I don't feel like 70% of the internet is isolated to a single data center. Let alone, a single cloud provider. I could be wrong though!

Hey where should I buy a used car from? Are car dealerships the easiest? Car Max?
Once you know what car you want to get, I would get certified pre-owned from a dealership
I have had good experiences with used cars from dealerships. Probably the best advice I can think of is to know your price and be willing to walk away if they arent willing to come down as much as you'd like. Make it clear you aren't attached to the car they have and you can wait for another one from another seller.
How should I decide where to buy a home? Or even if I should buy a home? I went out to get pre-approved to make an offer for this home but it has since been sold:
Ballard is close enough to any Seattle office. Very lovely walkable area, by the water, lots to do in Ballard and surrounding, but a pain in the ass to out of that Ballard/Magnolia/Queen Anne pocket and to the freeway. Worried about friends moving away, or feeling old compared to the demographic after 5-10 years. Or even just getting tired of the area after 5+ years.
Also, what are all the hidden or unexpected costs of owning a home?
Haha I don’t know anything about Seattle prices. The best way to calibrate your expectation for home prices is to save a Zillow search and watch all homes that meet your criteria that come on the market and get sold for at least a few months. After that, you will be good at spotting what is well-priced and have a good feeling what it will ultimately sell for.
@andelink that host was adorable 😍 But I’m sure there will be more, there always are.
Hard to advise others whether to buy a house or not (same with any investment). If you will love living in it and will hold it like any longterm investment (either live in it, or move and continue renting it) then it usually works out well.
@keenin you and jacob come move back to Seattle
Hey y'all does anyone have any good travel ideas for the USA? I want to make the most of the last COVID summer and work remotely in differently places. Sadly can't be international yet. I'm struggling to come up with many exciting options. Like I've done the California thing. Hawaii is nice and might do. Chicago for the Michelin star restaurants. New York I'd love to visit but maybe not while most things are shutdown. Would love some ideas!
Also NY is not in shutdown, they just lifted the restaurant /bar curfew
I’m looking for travel that would keep me kinda busy
But also I will drop serious money on good food
Yeah I mean Chicago has the food and you could stay in the city and you could walk, bike, run lakeshore (for outside), do the architecture tour (i still have yet to do this), idk. Chicago has the most michelin star restaurants (even includes a brewery)
Chicago is sounding great. It’s like a real city unlike Seattle. Do you think a month is too long?
I mean I don’t think so just because it’s such a big city. Also if you wanted you could rent a car part way and check out Michigan or Indianna (sand dunes is like the only cool thing) which is within 1-2h from Chicago
Also they are launching festivals most likely with the caveat that you need to be vaccinated
I’ve always wanted to go to Chicago I would love to have you there to give me the run about!! And the Great Lakes seem insane for real I’ve seen pics and can’t believe it
When I go to Chicago I’m for sure going to Alinea, so gotta time it around that. I’m always on the waitlist cause I usually miss the quarterly sign-ups
I’m getting my second vaccine dose May 12th! You vaccinated?
I am getting my 2nd one on Sunday! I did Alinea’s pop up last summer and it was really cool. So crazy they did takeout during covid…
Dang I’m jelly. Did they send you home with the edible helium balloons??
Thank you! It is still only on iphone 😞 But I would take the invite if I can use it once it is available on android.
For sure for sure is your # still 206-295-5511?
Same situation as Sam. I guess I'll take an invite though in case I ever need it. Thanks!
MFW a public endpoint in our platform gets mistakenly completely removed and I'm the one who finds it.
where's the alarms?
sometimes internal tooling is really good. sometimes it sucks.
we use grafana for visualisations, but pulling the data into it is... custom
I like the observability at Lyft. Has been easy to use. Although there was a couple months earlier this year where no alarms were triggering in staging and the observability team did not know (nor anyone else) until my teammate responded to a page in production that should have been caught in staging
Not sure how no one in the company knew staging alarms were down for months
yeah we always deserve more money
Even if we're not good at our jobs, we always deserve more money!!!!!
They just don’t understand yet. It took me working in tech to get to this point of expecting more/better from employers. It should be like this for everyone in and out of tech
I love this thread 😆 Not sure how I missed it til now 💰
HAPPY FREAKING FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (work has been a lot for me lately if you cannot tell)
Posted using /giphy | GIF by Marie Claire
Dude, yea. Fridays I usually have no meetings and its a chill day to ride into the weekend
monday and friday are my most populated days in terms of meetings
Friday meetings are rough. I used to have two hours of meetings every Friday afternoon... hated it. Changed teams and rearranged some 1:1s to get to at most one 30 minute 1:1 per Friday
Soooo, some fun news 😄 I’m gonna be having a daughter at the end of August 🤪
On a similar note, when are ya’ll fully vaccinated and down to get together? I get my 2nd shot on wed., so “fully vaccinated” on June 2nd.
Wow @spkaplan congratulations!!!!
Thanks Kyle! Lol alllll the emoji’s 😆
She is doing well! Various symptoms come and go, but nothing too bad yet.
That's good to hear 😊
This is the year of babies. My sister is having her first as well as my neighbor. A month ago no one in my life was having a baby soon and now three couples are! Exciting.
Are you feeling ready? What sort of prep have you been doing?
Haha the year of puppies and babies indeed! Congratulations to your sister!
Up until this point, I have mainly been focused on finishing up house projects. Now I am pivoting a bit to the actual baby part:
That is super exciting and it sounds like you are doing all the right prep work. Again, congratulations! I got my second shot on the 15th so I'll be ready just a few days after you I think.
What time do you all do lunch? We should do a lunch call!
Alrighty no pressure either way around noon we can see if folks are interested
I have it scheduled for 12-5 like a anytime people are free sort of thing
I can hop on from 3-315…meetings the rest of the afternoon 😭
i will be posting my apartment listing online during this time
Lando! Damn good for him. Must be doing well this season
@spkaplan haven’t seen morningcoffee yet I love it!

I'm glad you keep us updated on the day of the week, I would be lost without you ❤️
set up a reminder “Come to coworking day!” in this channel at noon every Friday, Pacific Daylight Time.
set the channel topic: Non-work banter and water cooler conversation
Coworking Day Video Link: https://meet.google.com/agz-kctd-jen
I got my teams quarterly activity today, but may be able to join later in the day
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Is it possible for you to you give everyone permissions to join the room without approval?
My Dr Appt ran long so I'm running late!! Gonna get some food then hop on the call!
A last minute meeting showed up for me 12:30_1:00pm! I'll hop on after!
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
fyi @tiaalexa it shows up in this reminder link every friday
All good! We actually hopped off maybe an hour ago
Any tips troubleshooting crazy slow (3Mbps) 5ghz wifi speeds on windows 10? I get 10ishMbps on 2.4ghz. Internet speed test on my phone in the same locations gets 100Mbps on 5ghz. Help!
All internet. I'm just running internet speed test for now. I've done all system updates and restarted.
Wow no that's crazy. Can you try with ethernet?
Even the 2.4ghz on the desktop (10mpbs) is much slower than what my phone gets (50mbps).
I can try with Ethernet, but not from the current location. I will move it downstairs and try with Ethernet
If it's a new PC, it could be bottle necked by the wifi adapter on the PC
Problem solved! Found antennas in the box...attached them...now getting 105mbps...fewf
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
I was out of town!! Sorry for not saying sooner!
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
yoooo i'm in a meeting till 12:30pm can hop on shortly after that. Discussion topics: how to get rid of little gnats/flies/things that hatch in my apartment every Friday like clockwork!
I just got paged so gotta respond to this first. hopefully not too much longer for me cross-finger-intensify
@andelink @keenin Sorry, got stuck in that meeting for a while, then had more meetings after that....
There's a special place in hell for people who schedule meetings past 3pm on a Friday
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
nvm i got too much going on today. next time for me!
Yeah it confused me! I had to double check with the airline itself mostly
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
service outage since 3am...won't join unless we solve it soon 😞
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Come hear about my recent romantic escapades and adventures in NYC!
Whoops totally missed this. I was on for a while but had to bounce
Another fun Friday: Customer of ours forgot to migrate their data out of our service, before the DC was shutdown...now we have to extract their data from our backups and try to restore it in other DCs.
Soooo many VPs on the call last night...i am curious to see what happens when the issue is resolved
Linux phone:
https://www.pine64.org/pinephone/
My manager just shared this, as we are still working on the incident from yesterday afternoon
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Actually, I can hop on just shortly after 1pm @andelink if that works better?
Actually let’s do 3:00pm PDT / 6:00pm EDT if that works for you still
I forgot about this, sorry! I need to head to a doctor's appointment in a few minutes but will see if you guys are still on when I get back.
I've missed so many co-working days and didn't even realize it 😭 I'm going to install slack on my work computer so I have a better chance. Miss you guys!
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Anyone going to be on today? I just got back from Cancun last night so I'm not working but am down to hop on.
I’m off today. I’ve lost my voice it’s hard talking
don't block out Security & Compliance's name!!
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
I have a meeting from 2:30pm - 3:00pm CDT, will hop back on coworking day afterwards (1:00pm PDT)
Yeah, sorry for not letting ya'll know ahead of time. Today I'm busy working on wrapping stuff up before baby arrives
Of course dude the baby is due this month!! Y'all are in my thoughts! When is your last day of work before paternity leave?
I've been off since Tuesday. The most recent update is that the baby is breech (not facing the right way), so we have a C-section scheduled for Monday. So, unless baby flips over, her birthday will be this coming Monday 🤪 at like 8am
Oh boy! I mean girl! I don't know much about C-sections but sending good energy your way. My sister was a C-section baby and she turned out to be a real weirdo!!
Very exciting times! I expect by Tuesday she'll be shipping RNNs and publishing papers with Brian 😁
Thanks so much for the good energy Kyle! Haha oh certainly by Tuesday 😝
@andelink whoops! Missed these notifications but I think you eventually found us in discord 😆
FYI if anyone also has messed up Bose headphone pads. Turns out they are really important. Recently mine went through some serious wear and tear and physically hurt to listen to music with them. Instead of replacing the headphones I found you can get replacement pads for < $20 👍
My git integration for my IDE decided to break on me so I've reverted back to the command line and just finished setting up my aliases/functions. Anybody have any cool customization that they've added to their profile?
I think I enjoy terminal customization just a bit too much...
Personally, I always add aliases to my frequented locations: project locations, webpage locations on my servers, etc. I also have aliases set up on all my servers that automatically sequentially opens every file that defines that server's IP address for quick editing, for when I accidentally cause the IP address to rotate.
Another one of my go-tos is a literal goto command for git that pulls the master branch and then checks out the specified branch.
I also just finished setting up a custom prompt function for powershell so that it shows the history id and location I am in and randomizes the color of the prompt, just for fun.
I'm a fan of customizations too. Share your profile?
When you say profile do you mean your .bash_profile/.zprofile or rc scripts?
I haven't really done too much IDE-git integrations. Usually stick to command line for git
Yea, that profile. Using powershell at the moment, but they all have an equivalent. I can share my profile but, again, powershell, so it won't be something you can copy exactly. Have the equivalents in all my profiles though, so it is still a reference.
Oh right Powershell is Windows. Nice I love to see it!!
Yours is way more than mine. Mine is silly lol this is all I got for git:
alias gb="git branch"
alias gs="git status"
alias gbs="git branch; git status"
ya lol when you type something so much you gotta shorten it
I usually just have the muscle memory kick in and type it fast enough that the shortening wouldn't save me more than a second or two a day
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Hey team! Thank you SOOO much for the card! It was incredibly sweet of you all.
Congrats dad!! That’s a full head of hair on a healthy looking baby ❤️
they want them to check that you are not a crazy person and you'll be a decent neighbor
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
I'm cancelling coworking day because I'm the only one who ever shows up
But truthfully I would like to see your beautiful faces one more time before we say farewell
Reminder: Come to coworking day!
Cool! I havent watched the Netflix Documentary yet, but I hope to get there.
I'm planning to watch the netflix doc too. Looks very cool! I bet there will be some great footage.
Is Katy perry still putting out music
I feel like every day at lunch in the Lyft office I hear Katy Perry
Got the rona, so I'm out for tomorrow's call 😭
Is this the kind of thing that other Geico policy holders expect to pay for with their insurance premiums?
I don’t think anyone would expect this to be covered by their insurance policy. Until now, that is. If this goes through it’d be setting quite a precedent
I stubbed my toe in my car and suffered emotional damage… $1,000,000 please 🙂
I'll give you an STD keenin and then we can split the payout
Of course. The article suggests all we need is HPV. Which I mean, cmon if you haven't gotten HPV have you even lived?
For the record, I have not gotten HPV. But for a cool $5.2M it’s no problem
the one in the top right is like a cross breed with a pig
I like the center one, it made a planet/sunrise thing behind the astronaut that looks like cat ears
boobs everywherei advise against trying this one
you know you could make that happen for yourself
But like, who has ever needed to see someone's GitHub contributions in VR..??
Your github profile page shows your contributions in a 2d space, so they gotta have the constant growth cycle for every aspect of the business ya know
Someone internally championed it and is writing up a promo doc based on them driving it across the finish line and they need our engagement metrics with it!
lol fair enough, I guess..? Suppose it probably didn't actually take that much effort on their end, so any value it provides could be worth it
yeah just some fun, not a critical feature by any means
smh you’re just unhappy with what your skyline looks like
but don’t worry once you start at lyft it’ll fix itself 💹 📈
you have a gap in the middle of your year
i should get points in my skyline for them
honestly making them nfts would have been a hit
That would've brought value
Whenever I look at GitHub, I get a small burst of motivation to start working on something fun, but I know deep down that the chances of me maintaining that motivation are slim to none...
Yeah I love github its always inspiring browsing different projects
https://twitter.com/morozov_dev/status/1558797789513089024?t=Wig3W56ok3OXAv-4e_fUkw&s=19
I saw this topic on my news thread today too, but from a different source. I'm not surprised. It feels like it would really mess with your soft tissue and stuff though.
Yeah can't be good. Pretty unreal folks are doing this
You use markdocs specifically or something else?
What are the interactive bits / how interactive? I'm just trying to refresh my memory because the most interactive docs I recall from Amazon was wiki 2.0
Lol, what are docs? My team seems to prefer the #codeisdocs life facepalm
It's definitely a balance. I was solidly in the “the code is the best docs” camp before joining my current team. But the culture here places a lot of value on useful documentation and I benefited a lot from it, so now I'm in the “documentation is almost as important as the code” camp
Wow, their docs are really nice and I would love to use them. They had to build an entire documentation platform to get it though 😮 And in the end, no matter how shiny the docs are, they are still only useful if they are maintained. For external and mature products like this, it totally makes sense to have a dedicated process and time allocated directly to maintenance. It can be difficult to find the balance though.
Facts. It’s a slippery slope of letting docs become stale, makes it way harder to ever update them
True, but I think one of the ideas about this is that it makes it easier to keep the docs updated. I.e. we can pull company wide data into our docs and automatically create new ones when a new region is built in the cloud.
You definitely have to have some amount of background knowledge, only knowing that Surrey was in southern England almost wasn't enough, I just got lucky that "conurbations" was the correct section to look under at one point lol
Me neither, it was just the only subsection under geography that I didn't know so I hoped it was something like regions, and it was lol
Man, that was tougher than I thought it would be after getting to "Biology". There was a section called "Fungi" under "Natural Products" but I had to go down the "Penicillin" rabbit hole to find a link to "Fungi/Fungus".
I was also surprised how tough it was to complete
Can someone with good googling skills help me find details of the case mentioned in this Reddit post [1]? Only results I'm getting are for parents suing for wrongful death of child, not child suing for wrongful death of parents.

Are you just trying to track down the anonymous person in the post?
Love that you numbered your single reference as well. Thanks for driving clarity in everything you do!
I was typing on mobile and didn't want to bother with hyperlinking or putting the full url in the middle of my question
I love seeing stuff like this. Gives such an awesome feeling https://youtu.be/PBOt48UwxSU
MMM recently wrote an article about Dr. Huberman who is a neuroscientist that has a podcast I've been listening to lately. Fun to see the combination of both of them in one context.

Wow, absolutely amazing. Really had me on the hook there once he verified that the issue was reproducible. I love that he took the issue all the way to the root cause instead of stopping when he noticed that the application version had been modified and was probably causing issues with the config.

I jumped the gun a bit with this post. The ratio of technical detail dropped off quite a bit in the later part of the pod. Still an interesting conversation though.

I'm trying out BitWarden free. If it doesn't seem good enough, I'll try your suggestions. Thanks!
Saw this today about BitWarden
Passwordless Authentication – Access Your Bitwarden Web Vault Without a Password
I guess to discuss this latest Bitwarden feature launch? “Passwordless Authentication - Access Your Bitwarden Web Vault Without a Password”
Idk though I had never heard of Bitwarden let alone use it until I saw the post, so didn’t really spend time reading it
gotcha 🙂 yeah, i just didnt 3mins of google searching for best free password mananger, and bitwarden seemed consistently near the top, so trying it out 🤷
Looking into this, any updates here?
I think I'm leaning toward BitWarden. I can't resist some good ol' FOSS and it seems to have the most feature-rich free tier and a cheap paid tier. Unless @spkaplan found a good reason not to? 👀
FWIW: I've had a great experience with BitWarden for the past 6mo or so.
Do you use free or paid? Hard to gauge the value of the paid features just from their three-word descriptions
Free has basic functionality, and enables me to share stored creds with my wife via an Organization.
id be surprised if my email WASN'T on the dark web
Just guessing here, but it seems like your email was found on the darkweb
Do you use a password manager for every single password, or only for “important” sites (e.g. banks, investment accounts, etc…)?
Mostly the important ones. I bought it after having passwords everywhere. So gotta migrate a bunch still
Could you imaging logging in to check on your mortgage one day and it was at 0. I would cry happiness
All it would cost me is being in a YouTube video where he shows up at my house 😂
Re: auto loan yeah I was gonna say if it’s low enough it’s free money I’d take it too. Wonder when we’ll be back to those days
Will be interesting to see. We were only at such low rates because of 2008, then COVID. Might be a long time before we see them again
Bought this for Gemma. I'm obsessed with it!
😍 i love it so much. buying this for my nephew as his xmas gift
@brandon here’s an example of iteratively building a shell script with chatgpt to get your creative juices flowing
https://brev.dev/blog/ai-wont-replace-you-write-bash
I’ve wanted to find time to try writing code with copilot or chatgpt, but haven’t found the time yet
i hate writing shell scripts, so it seems like a great case to use to
Gotta be a bit careful with your prompts to tune it, that’s definitely where some skill comes in
I strongly recommend using shellcheck whenever you write any shell scripts, if you don’t already. It’ll really improve you and get your scripts up to standard in a pretty low effort way
https://github.com/koalaman/shellcheck
I just asked chat to write me a gradle task that checks a file named xyz for a string, and throws an exception if the string is not found. it produced a 100% working piece of code. Not crazy complicated, but still crazy to me. it even first checked if the file existed before checking for the string and threw an exception if didn’t.
Asking gpt about a language’s convention (if you’re not super familiar with the language) is super helpful.
Haha amazing! More of these types of things I hear of the more I’m gonna try to truly find ways for it to save me time
Here is the first prompt i gave it for that problem. all i had to do was change the string it was searching for
I love that it explains the code in English afterwards
im gonna read your earlier post abou the iterative bash development now
I know this has been said before, but chatgpt hooked up to the internet, so its data is uptodate will be 🔥
Yeah! Definitely a knowledge refresh will be nice. I’ve been given outdated answers
https://www.vice.com/en/article/wxn955/chatgpt-can-negotiate-comcast-bills-down-for-you
Just days after creating unique, complex passwords and moving them into a password manager, I got notified I was locked out of my bank for too many incorrect attempts (wasn't me). With my old password, the credential stuffing (if that is indeed what someone was attempting) might have worked. Better late than never.
I've had my eye on it for a while but haven't tried it yet. I want to review my daily supplements and see what the overlap would be.
I haven't listened to that podcast before. I've heard of AG from Armchair Expert and SMR, two sources I trust.
I've really been enjoying it, and tend to trust Huberman's sponsors/recommendations. It's still a paid advertisement though which is always important to keep in mind.
I ordered some AG though and it will arrive tomorrow. I'll let you know how I like it!
I love when you find sources that you actually trust their sponsors/recommendations. It can actually be a great way to discover good products.
Sweet! Definitely let me know how you like it. I have been seeing lost of folks on reddit replying to SMR that they started using it and notice a big difference in their energy levels.
Yeah, I ordered a 30 day supply and have been taking it for almost a month now. It's an acquired taste but I like it now, andI think it's a good foundational supplement cocktail that should also promote gut health. However I'll most likely try to get more specialized/targeted with my supplements. Still deciding when and how often I want to use it.
@brandon how do you determine what vitamins/supplements to take? Hitting 30 soon is making me think I should ensure I'm getting all the vitamins and such I should be getting.
Maybe this Huberman Lab episode? https://open.spotify.com/episode/5QrvbQlNkV2kCI1a92Hpfl?si=_NCPZRs6SreelnQf5BrUIg&app_destination=copy-link
The episode was definitely helpful, but not quite specific enough on what supplements to try for specific potential benefits.
Going down the Huberman Lab rabbit hole now...
I'm experimenting with different things right now, mostly in response to a number of Huberman episodes that gave me ideas. I won't give you any specifics yet, but maybe once you've done some research we can compare notes. And I agree, this episode was pretty generic and didn't offer much in terms of actionable advice. Let me give you a couple that stand out as I look back over the episode history to help you get the rabbit hole started (in no particular order). I really enjoy listening to the guest episodes because it's more like listening in on a conversation. The solo episodes can be good too, but they are more like a lecture.
Thank you! The Andy Galpin series is already bookmarked 😄 I'll add the rest as well.
I generally get good sleep, and eat well enough, get time outside, and such, which is why I'm looking for the next step/layer (i.e. supplements).
Sounds good! Even if you already feel good about most of your behavioral practices, there is still some interesting science in those episodes (for example, light and it's effect on your circadian clock). And I think it helps to understand the underlying mechanisms as you approach supplementation.
Totally agree! I plan to listen to those episodes, to fill the knowledge gaps, before I start popping pills 🙂 Once I get there, hopefully I can get you to tip your hand about what your doing. I won't blindly go do the same thing 😄
Indeed! Just read that this weekend.
Would you recommend the brand you use?
Yeah, I think I'd recommend the brand I get. I've never gotten it from anywhere else though and haven't really compared prices. Maybe you can let me know what you think. This actually has me thinking that I should probably do a comparison...
I get mine from MyProtein, which is also where I get my preworkout and protein powder. When I did my research way back when, the sentiment was that they were affordable, but still had good quality stuff.
I've done the "load" period before but didn't really bother this last time (coming back from a period of not working out). From what I've heard, it may just take a bit longer to get saturated. I didn't have any bad effects from taking several doses in the same day though so I'd say it's safe if you want to do it.
I'm not very scientific about it at the moment but just try to make sure I have lots of ways to get protein throughout the day. If I was measuring my intake, I would refer to the notes here from Andy Galpin. The rule of thumb is at least 1g / pound of body weight for muscle gains. I like the idea of measuring it, but it gets pretty tiresome for me to do it for more than a 1-2 week focused stint so I end up just doing check ins every once in a while.
👍
I'm assessing my protein intake and altering my diet to ensure I'm getting plenty. I similarly don't plan to track it daily, once I get a good diet habit nailed down.
@spkaplan what platform do you listen to your podcasts on?
I used to use some free mobile app. Now I use Spotify. Have a family account that we share with some friends and family.
https://open.spotify.com/show/59I1XnvAB9fQzSj9SIKCoI
https://softskills.audio/
I think you’d enjoy this show. Great guys. Not a technical podcast. It focuses on the soft-skills side of engineering. It’s got tons of gems and also is one of the most entertaining “technical” podcasts I listen. They’re pretty fun to listen to, good chemistry
@brandon under github.com/settings/profile, update your Contributions & Activity preferences to include private contributions
Will do. But I don't really have any private activity at the moment either.
They do. Well GHE. But I don't use my personal account. I have an @epicgames account.
Lyft just uses public/cloud GitHub and you are added to the "Lyft" organization for ACL purposes?
I guess Lyft used to do GHE, but by the time I joined they were in the middle of migrating off of it
Gotcha. That is how Microsoft worked for certain repos. None of the stuff I worked on though.
Self hosted usually just means more maintenance, slower feature rollout, but cheaper and more private.

What can Spaghettify do?
Introduce a Bug
Throw in a subtle change that will break the code, leaving your coworkers scratching their heads for hours. Add a stray +1, extra iteration, or nested list with ease!
Obscure Code
Was the code too readable? Too elegant? Could your coworkers understand what it did with a passing glance? Well not anymore!
Add Irrelevant Comments
Do you ever look at code and think, "This sorting function sure could use an existential questioning about why it's there". Now it's easy!
Document with Emoji
While we're ✍️ writing comments, how 👏 about documenting the 👏 code 😤 entirely with 🐺 emoji? 🎭🙋
Overly Descriptive Names
Make your code just a little bit more explicit about what it does. (We see you, Objective-C developers.)
Random Whitespace
Win the space race by adding random, inconsistent spaces all throughout your formerly symmertrical code.
Fancy Docstring
Document your code automatically using any character or style. Rap lyrics? Dirty limerick? Fast talkin' 1930's gangster? A pirate on acid? Whatever you need, Spaghettify heeds.
It uses the OpenAI text-davinci-003 completion API. Here’s the prompts for each category of changes it makes, for the curious:

Oh no, this is terrible lol I thought it was funny until I found out it was ChatGPT enabled. Now it's just scary. That means it can actually incorporate subtle bugs intelligently 😱
I've chatted with a couple people about VPNs before, and I still really like Mullvad for a number of reasons, but just found that you can get Mozilla Relay and VPN for $6-7 a month, which is a pretty fair price. TL;DR on Relay: it masks your contact info (email, phone number) so you can interact with sites without losing your privacy. It can also filter tracking and promotional emails, if you're into that. Cool service, but also seems like something that would be hard to move away from if you rely on it for all your accounts.
I’ve been using Mullvad ever since we talked about it a few months ago
Good experience so far. Really like it
Nice, glad to hear it! I didn't use it on my phone for the first few months for some reason... but it was super easy to setup once I did, like two minutes max.
I'm still hoping I get the energy to set it up on my router one day though
Yeah the phone is my primary use-case actually. It’s a really nice integration!
oops didn’t mean to send that to the channel
Fair points that I think apply to some situations/providers more than others. I audited VPN providers to my personal standards when I sought one out and landed on Mullvad, trusting their model and policies. Totally fair if others come to a different conclusion. I also use a VPN to hide my traffic from my ISP, not to provide any sort of privacy on the actual sites I access.
Pretty much, personally, I accept those points but disagree that they are universally applicable. VPNs may provide less privacy than certain providers may want you to think, but I understand the limitations and still value the service for what it is.
And I still use a VPN despite all the discussion in that gist
Sam dropped this bomb on us and then disappears
When Elon bought Twitter, to regain the public's trust, he allowed independent journalists to review all internal Twitter comms. They are uncovering all sorts of crazy shit. Too much to summarize. The journalist were just deposed by a House Select Subcommittee the other day, if you'd rather watch than read Twitter Files releases.
I’m gonna have to revisit this when I have some time
There are lots of takeaways 😄 The biggest one is probably that many government agencies (FBI, DHS, etc... soo many) have an established system, process, etc... to censor info across all major social media platforms.
gotta run to a meeting. Even just watch the open statements in the video i linked above. that gives a good summary
4:00
and
9:40
are the timestamps for the beginning of the opening statements
Just looking for anyone to discuss it with 😅 No matter your thoughts on it, it is undeniably interesting.
Sorry dude, I’m terrible at watching videos. If I could read it I’d have read it by now. But I like have a mental blocker and need to specifically allocate time if I want to watch a video\
It's funny how we are the opposite on that. I consume videos much more easily. Anyway...ill see if i can find the transcript to the opening statemetns.
It was written up in a blog somewhere which would probably be easier to digest, but I can't find it now.
I think you can read it on the journalist's substacks, but I haven't confirmed.
I'm generally pretty centrist, or slightly left of center, but some of the lines of questioning from some of the democrats on the committee freak me out, to put it lightly.
@andelink a hook, to draw you in https://twitter.com/townhallcom/status/1633874644955430921?t=xiWcYbA-DyeXNk2-vGPINg&s=19
The guy I linked you to above. He was given the first installment of the twitter files by Elon
The first installment (hunter biden laptop story) is linked above in it's original form
Oh whoops, I got that women mixed up with the guy I was talking about. I think Bari Weiss did the second installment.
Turns out it is only the first 2 hours of the video, there is another committee hearing appended for some reason, which is the next 2 hours. So, on 2x speed, its only 1 hour 😄
@andelink If you want to read. Probably it is worth reading the Twitter Files releases directly. Here is one of the releases about the govt involvement in censorship. https://twitter.com/mtaibbi/status/1633830002742657027?t=AMjxFoUF-Ou4aXXrar7yug&s=19
This is such a tricky issue. So easy to support or not support measures on this based on how the content being censored sits with your personal views
Totally agree, it's very tempting to stop people from saying stuff that we don't agree with. It's totally fine for a private company to choose what they allow on their platform, but the govt def shouldn't be involved, directly or by proxy.
Clarification: unless the language is against the law. But very little language is illegal.
There are bunch of these Twitter Files reports that focus on different discoveries, but this particular thread is probably the most interesting/concerning yet.
@spkaplan how can I watch a youtube video while also viewing the comments at the same time? on youtube.com in my web browser
Good question. Not sure off the top of my head if it's possible. I'm AFK so can't poke around at the moment. Worst case scenario, two browser windows.
oh dang. thought it was just my incompetence. this is far worse
I just dont usually read YouTube comments, but it very well might be possible.
Maybe there is a way to make the video play in one of those like floating small players while you scroll down. Like what Facebook does when you start a video but then keep scrolling. I'd have be at my computer and poke around though.
yeah i’d love a native pip feature on youtube.com
a small, floating video player that plays whatever content you were/are watching, allowing you to browse the rest of the application/system while still seeing your video
I immediately go to Performance Improvement Plan or the Python package installed. Thanks for enlightening me!
on my iphone it is a feature that works automatically if i navigate to anywhere else on my phone. not seeing that happen in my browser
Maybe MacOS supports it natively? Now you've got me curious. I'm gonna try it this evening once Gemma does to bed
someone in my building is playing piano and singing it’s actually quite nice happy friday
Epic Games will be at GDC for the first time in 4 years this Wednesday, the 22nd. The "State of Unreal" keynote is at 9:30am if you're interested in checking it out! There should be some pretty cool demos regarding the engine, gaming, animation, and art.
set up a reminder that “UE Keynote is starting in 30 mins” in this channel at 9AM Wednesday, March 22nd, Pacific Daylight Time.
fuck i just lost a giant pr comment i was in the middle of typing out because i accidentally hit the back button on my mouse
wow gatekeeping chat i have valuable things to offer
Probably necessary for these large streams due to bot attacks and spamming 🤷♂️ If you subscribe now you can send a message soon!
Just checked the price of slack pro again because I was sad about the 90 day message history. It's more expensive than I expected honestly. I know $7.25/person/month isn't that crazy, but still. I guess it is a service we use a lot, and we don't want to be the product so 🤷♂️
It just forces us to have a "membership fee" for the server instead of just having the people we want on here, regardless of their participation frequency.
We have $250 in credit, which gets premium for 8 months
We just have credits. Don’t know where they came from
It just forces us to have a "membership fee" for the server instead of just having the people we want on here, regardless of their participation frequency. This isn't necessarily true since we only get billed for active members
I'm lost, lol. What will it actually cost us? I wish it was a flat rate for such a small number of users. The per user cost results in what feels like a really high cost
I agree. It sucks that each of us adds to the cost. Tell Salesforce to fix that! 😁 The price is $7.25/active person/month (when billed annually). I'm forgetting the added cost of billing monthly, but it's an extra dollar or so.
If we don’t have an increase in # active users, we won’t have to pay for 8 months
i used a card that has a limit of $1/mo, so we once we run out of our credit, the payment will fail and we will lose pro. we can revisit this decision of whether we want to pay then
“fair billing” for an unfair pricing model
@spkaplan do you have a discount because you work at salesforce?
I opened a new terminal window as was greeted with You have mail. Does anyone know where this comes from?
Just saw this, did you ever figure it out? It's been a few years, but IIRC, any terminal session on a network is able to send mail to any other terminal session on that network.
it looks like my cronjob failed one time and it sent a message with the error message to this mail inbox. never seen this before. thanks for the pointer 👍
Interesting. A K8s cron job or local? Wondering why it went to that mailbox
local, on my personal laptop

Good! My first thought when ChatGPT came out was why are all the voice assistants not hooked up to this
For you CS grads: were you surprised at what “real” code looked like in your jobs after graduating? Compared against all the code you saw/wrote in school. How was it different or most surprising?
It's certainly different, but I wouldn't say that fact was surprising. At least for me, I knew I wasn't gonna be writing out algorithms all day every day. It's like how it's not really surprising that leetcode is different
I honestly had no idea what to expect until my first internship 😄
And it wasn't like the code we wrote at school at all. Just the scale of a project alone was enough to set it apart. You don't get exposure to writing code that gets deployed to production as part of a complex system. The closest thing to that I guess would be the senior project, but I feel like that project was what you made of it. Kind of a joke for some people.
Kind of a joke for some people. What do you mean by this?
It really didn't matter if it worked... as long as you explained everything and the client/partner was fine.
Yeah, pretty much. The work could also be done by one or two people in the group while everyone else did nothing.
https://www.thecut.com/2023/03/how-can-new-fathers-support-each-other.html
@spkaplan wdyt of this? How does this track for you?
Yeah it was. I didn’t agree with the articles tone at times. But I don’t think it was mean spirited or meant to be patronizing
I think you’re my only friend that’s a dad, so you’re the only person I can ask lol
I'm letting it marinade. I'll send some thoughts this afternoon when I have free time
First thought: Not sure why it focuses on dads, vs guys in general. The fact that dads have the added responsibility of kid(s) seemed tangential to the point of the article, that guys have been told masculinity is bad, now we're all lonely, and have no support from family, and don't have enough time for our relationships.
other commenters said it made them anxious. Same with you?
It's just really noisy and hard to read. It's fun to watch for a sec, but it's not a good clock
can someone bring my personal laptop to me. i don’t wanna go downstairs to get it
Anybody know how to display both local time and UTC time in the MacOS menu bar?
Actually. I know the developer. Use his other projects. Would be surprised if this is from him but not available via github or brew…
I did the free trial to test it out and then paid for it. I really like Sindre (the developer) and use a lot of his tools, so I have no problem supporting him by buying one of his paid apps
You can use the free trial version indefinitely
@brandon here’s what the full screen notifications look like. Once it pops up, I just hit the “enter” key and then it opens the meeting
Nice! That is very cool. I might have to try that.
Has anyone used this Orion Browser before?
https://browser.kagi.com/
Ah, I don't think I've shared some news here 😅 Having kid 2 (of 2) (a boy) this summer (August again) 🤪
A male heir… the Kaplan name will live on 🏆
Thanks! It's gonna be a wild ride, at least until G gets a bit older.
We haven't landed a name yet 😬 Open to suggestions.
At least you have plenty of time to think about it. What is your daughter's name again?
Nailed. Got it. I'll tell Steph we picked a name
Article synthesizing the information on the covid-19 outbreak, some new some not, but pretty damning if you ask me:

Non-paywalled version:

Pretty good read.
It’s a shame this all happened during a U.S. election cycle. COVID-19 origin and cover-up would not have been politicized otherwise.
I'll give it a read. I totally agree about the shame of it being politicized.
I just started using the "save for later" feature in slack, and it's awesome! If there is a long article or post I don't have time to look at right now but want to save a reference, now I can! I love that it keeps a record of completed "tasks" as well.
yeah i’m a big fan. it brings order to my huge save bin
Department of Defense massively overspends on goods purchased from contractors e.g. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, etc. $52,000 for a trash can gtfo
https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2023/06/20/the-pentagons-52000-trash-can/
Yeah, its ridiculous. No incentives are in place. Govt isn't spending its own $.
Yeah, this was eye-opening to me, to see these numbers
I also read this yesterday and it really blew my fucking mind:
I bought the authors book after reading it. It’s about the incentive structures of our government, for both elected officials and govt employees, how they interact and all the unintended consequences of well-intentioned policy - specifically about hiring policies and culture and how it fucks things up. Really good story from the article about a government contractor way overworking, overspending, on a simple GPS protocol they need to use, while in industry such a thing is no sweat, and then goes from there into how it all came to be and why.
If you’ve wondered why HBO / Discovery has gone to shit it’s because of this asshole:
https://archive.ph/2023.07.03-160323/https://www.gq.com/story/david-zaslav-warner-bros-discovery-ceo-tcm-max
(Archive link because the original story was pulled after being published)
archive links are always super finicky for me. they only work with the right combination of vpn on/off, cellular or wifi, safari or chrome
I read an article about this guy and his approach. They said he’s trying to do the whole “fail fast” approach… which apparently he is either not doing well or doesn’t work well via TV/streaming
he turned both discovery (an educational network) and hbo (quality network) into reality slop
removed big name, network exclusives like westworld from streaming
macOS Sonoma introduces desktop widgets and it’s pretty hilarious how Apple designed their interactions with desktop file icons:

I hate desktop icons so I disable them anyways
Does anyone use a copy&paste history tool? I just downlaoded Flycut and trying it out...
I would love to, but I always worry about clipboard history of sensitive content and thus I have not yet tried one. Haven’t heard of Flycut, and after a quick search couldn’t find a mention of any sensitive content handling or configuration options. LMK how you like it and if you find it does have those options.
If you wanna try out others as well, some popular alternatives that support configuration around content/behavior or natively don’t keep certain content in the history (e.g. passfrom from lastpass) are: Alfred, Maccy, and Hammerspoon. People also mention Raycast a lot, but their whole subscription model turns me off
Hmm, good point about sensitive content. I'll look into that. I guess as long as the tool doesn't transmit the history off my laptop, then that's probably fine 🤷 WDYT?
On first usage, I LOVE having a clipboard history that I can navigate quickly with only keystrokes. I didn't realize how often I want to paste something I copied a few copies again, which I usually would have to go re-copy.
Flycut is open source, so I'm more likely to trust anything they claim than a closed source tool.
Flycut enables you to turn off copy history on demand, so you could disable it when you are going to copy a password or some cred.
I won't be turning on any "sync"-like features, so to avoid it having a reason to transmit copy history.
Hmm, good point about sensitive content. I’ll look into that. I guess as long as the tool doesn’t transmit the history off my laptop, then that’s probably fine 🤷 WDYT?Yeah, it’s probably no big deal. I just don’t like seeing it lol. Neither these tools nor password managers are meant to protect you from a local attacker. So what can you really do anyways
Flycut enables you to turn off copy history on demand, so you could disable it when you are going to copy a password or some cred.Nice! That’s sufficient for me
Just gotta remember to disable and re-enable it…
This is supported natively in Windows now with Win+V in case you are on a windows machine.
This is the most baffling security mishandling I’ve read about in a long, long time. And the owner is denying it, and continues to keep the site with problems online!
Yikes. That was fun to read but completely baffling and scary. They messed up on such basic tasks that I would just assume any functioning business would have taken care of. I need to be checking my network traffic more often I guess...
Yeah, like at what point can someone be criminally prosecuted for negligence? Other professions have certifications/requirements that are needed to practice professionally and thus offer a way to prosecute bad actors. But not CS. Anyone can build anything and no one can be faulted
I love when people use “Docker” in their speaking as if it’s a common noun e.g. “when Node-RED is in the docker.” Even better when they combine this with using it as a synonym for “image” e.g. “you can see all of our dockers on our website.” Can’t help but smile
I'm not even sure what this one means lol
"when Node-RED is in the docker."Like, when Node-RED is deployed via docker?
Hello, this is a simple example of a JSON API server, it will be useful if you have services in Docker and want to communicate between services (Docker)
As an example, when a Node-Red is in the docker and you need to work with pyatv
Added here (send pull request), maybe someone will help to make it better or correct errors
Thank you

Epic debate on AI, will it kill us or not? https://www.youtube.com/live/6yQEA18C-XI?feature=share
George Hotz is the kid who was famous for doing iPhone jail breaks. He's gone on to start Comma.ai (solving self driving in consumer electronic form). IMO he's a pretty cool and smart guy to keep up with.
The other guy is only someone I became aware of recently because he is an AI alarmist, so he obvs got a lot of pressure coverage after chatgpt. He was on Lex Friedman within the past few months.

Not until I came back to Slack did I see the twitter logo and “peace”
Oh, really? The twitter logo really stands out to me, but the other ones are less clear. Did you check out the whole thread? (requires being signed in) The PEACE one is actually an animation 😮
Yeah, that's my issue right now too. Worth checking out signed in on mobile though.

I requested the list of twitter advertisers that have included me in their targeting audience and I don’t know what to make of it. This list is sad.
kyle, your advertiser list is ready! The list attached includes the advertisers that have included you in a tailored audience.
I really wish there was some time dimension attached. My twitter account is almost 12 years old at this point
Huh! That is so interesting. I wonder how brands go about choosing people
I assume it’s models identifying users with a higher likelihood of converting on ad impressions, given the users others browsing history
They have twitter data as well as other internet usage. If you go through your twitter account settings, you have to opt out of a bunch of data sharing partnerships twitter has with other businesses
I love the idea of this https://www.rewind.ai/pendant
I can see the appeal and would probably benefit a lot from something like this, but I have a lot of concerns with wearing a startups mic all day. I also would like to see them demo how it integrates with this privacy first software they have developed. I can't find any demonstrations of the software and hardware working together on the site 🤔 Or really any demonstration at all. Have you tried the software? Is it like a chatGPT type interface?
I haven't tried it yet. It seems super new (like 2022). The hardware seems like a very minor extension to their app (which already captures audio when you're using your laptop). The software, they say, runs locally, and only transmits small snippets to chatgpt-4 when you engage certain functionality. That's what I've grasped from a very short skim of their website.
Honestly, the screen capture laptop app seems really helpful for work. Not sure how much I would use the pendant for daily conversation searching. I guess if I forgot something Steph told me lol
I was gonna say, this reminds me of the app that is always recording and indexing of all your computer usage + screen content… it’s the same company!
Ie looked at their original product back when it launched last year and it didn’t have any ChatGPT/AI integration. Even then I thought it would be super valuable. There are privacy concerns, but I think I would feel comfortable with it by opting out of anything that send your data to a cloud service (ie their Ask Rewind feature - although it sounds incredibly useful). If their compression/storage and impact on battery is as good as they say, they’ve done something truly remarkable. All in all I would love to try this out, but mainly on my work computer, which I don’t think my employer would allow
I had not heard of Pendant before. I would also really like this product, but my concerns are amplified. I don’t love the idea of being mic’d up all day, but I recognize the benefits of it. I also don’t want to physically wear it lol. But my biggest concern is recording other people. I personally would hate to find out that someone I’ve been around / talking to was wearing one of these. They only have one blurb about this on their site:
What about consent?
We offer features for you to ensure no one is recorded without their consent.
I like this feature:
Automatic todo list generation whenever you verbally commit to doing something to someone else.
Okkkaayyyyy.

does the mullvad browser work? i vaguely recall it being based off the tor browser or something like that
I often deal with unixtime in various places like Slack, terminal, jupyter notebooks etc. I often want to see what datetime they represent, which is easy to do in the terminal but less easy anywhere else. So I made a shortcut that I can use anywhere by highlighting text and then hitting ctrl+shift+d to have a pop up show the datetime values. It can handle nanoseconds, microseconds, milliseconds, and seconds since epoch.
If you’re interested here it is:
You can also run it from the terminal:

I very much appreciate that they added PR deets as well, like author, diff, and approver. I usually check those all manually before deciding to review anyway. An expandable description would be the cherry on top.
Didn't know which channel to put this in so (@)here we are:
I've had a couple conversations recently that got me thinking about the general perspective on privacy and would appreciate some info for my informal research. Answers on a scale from 0-10, and explanations would be nice but aren't required, especially if they would hold you back from answering at all :) (also, privacy = digital privacy, unless otherwise stated)
Aside from #1, are these questions about digital privacy? I think I am more conscious of digital privacy concerns than IRL privacy
Ryan you will probably think my answers should be lower (ie less private) but I think compared to most normal people my numbers hold up.
Ryan you will probably think my answers should be lowerI'm not here to judge :) and part of the value is understanding people's opinions on their personal understanding and threat models. I can develop my own opinion based on the information given, if necessary.
I do think there a lot of “unknown unknowns” in the privacy space. Someone who thinks they are maintaining strong privacy could have quite poor privacy and not even know why, and wouldn’t necessarily know how to learn about their vulnerabilities
Right now, I'm more curious about how people think they are doing, and what they see as holding them back
ie chatting with Isabelle, she almost would rather be in blind ignorance because the whole space is daunting and hard to understand
For sure. Ignorance is bliss. It’s too much to think about, because it’s everywhere. And people would have to give up all their digital niceties
I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect people to understand or care. I think people in tech are responsible for making privacy happen without users needing to know anything about it
Ehh, I don't think it's reasonable to expect companies to think about the users' best interests lol asking for society to change at that point. I do think a reasonable middle ground is the government requiring all data collection to be explicitly opt-in, with no collection being the default. But, in the meantime, education is all we got. Worrying about ideals, and being upset that the current situation is not ideal, is not gonna get the average user very far.
And I do think expecting people to care is reasonable. Or at least expecting people to make the informed decision to not care. We've gotten too complacent with blindly clicking through online forms, often making accounts and handing over data for things that we don't spend any significant amount of time using.
Personally, I have ~500 accounts saved in my password manager. This week, I've used ~3.
Sure. Be it the companies doing things for good reasons or by way of government mandate, I don’t think normal people should have to think about this stuff
We’ve gotten too complacent with blindly clicking through online forms, often making accounts and handing over data for things that we don’t spend any significant amount of time using.I agree
I don’t think normal people should have to think about this stuffAnd I disagree with that. The mandate I described would make users have to stop and think about this stuff, even just for the few seconds it takes to enable the data collection necessary to use whatever they are trying to use. That is more thinking than most people do right now, and createa friction when enabling collection, rather than when disabling it.
We might be in agreement here but miscommunicating. idk.
I also think people should care and be informed. I just don’t think it’s realistic to (i) expect them to, and (ii) put the burden of privacy on them. Maybe I’m a bit more cynical than you idk but I just do not believe there is any chance most normal people will care enough to get educated and then also take the necessary steps to protect themselves/their data. I really think that is a pipe dream removed too far from reality to be a serious approach for making society-wide impact.
What I’m trying to say is I think the it’s the moral responsibility of tech people, the people actually building the software and systems used by everyone, to bake privacy and security into the products so that by default grandma is secure and she doesn’t have to be concerned about it. Because she’s not going to spend time thinking/acting on it either way.
I think everything that would compromise your privacy should be explicitly opt-in. I think laws around data collection should far tighter. I don’t think any data beyond what is required to operate your app/service/whatever should be legal to collect. And then the user should still be able to opt-out. Permissions should be granular and off by default. User-friendly tooling should be in place to see exactly what network requests are being made by an application/website with what data (I use little snitch and proxyman on macos; proxyman and apple’s app privacy report on ios). I think data brokers in general should be outlawed. And so many other things…
The majority of applications/services are user-hostile by default. And that has to change. We can’t expect normal users to change, it’s just not practical
it’s the moral responsibility of tech peopleMy point is just that relying on the morality of the creators is never going to be a solution. See the Google stuff you've shared for a recent example.
Permissions should be granular and off by default. This, and your whole last paragraph really, is pointless if people don't understand why it is that way. If people did not also learn, even just at a high-level, about digital privacy, then they would just see this as friction between them and what they want to access, and it would be a point of annoyance that they would rather not have.
My point is just that relying on the morality of the creators is never going to be a solution. You are right here. We can’t rely on altruism, if you could call it that. But I still stand by the fact that is has to be baked into the products. The law must change to enforce it to be so.
This, and your whole last paragraph really, is pointless if people don’t understand why it is that wayWrong. 99% of people never change defaults. The entire Google antitrust case is based on this argument fact. That is why Google pays Apple $18B+ per year to be the default search engine on the browser. Google knows people don’t change defaults. Apple knows they don’t change defaults. Fucking Microsoft knew it back when they were taken to court for IE antitrust case way back when. Once certain behavior is made the default, that behavior will apply for the overwhelming majority of people until there is different default behavior.
Wrong. 99% of people never change defaults. The entire Google antitrust case is based on this argument fact. That's a different situation that doesn't have a 1:1 comparison. If the default search engine provides the results one wants, sure, they won't change it. If, by default, TikTok had all permissions disabled and just didn't work until they were enabled, people would blindly click through enabling them, much as people already do with current permission requests, and be annoyed at the friction.
Somewhat related: I also just have a different perspective on education in general. I think people don't know enough about the consequences of their decisions on the environment, their own health and nutrition, their privacy, their economic well-being, their mental health, on and on. I think, in general, their should be more of a societal push for high-level education. I'm getting the feeling you disagree with that point. So, I think, fundamentally, we are going to disagree on the finer details.
If, by default, TikTok had all permissions disabled and just didn’t work until they were enabled, people would blindly click through enabling them, much as people already do with current permission requests, and be annoyed at the friction.I disagree with this. The only permissions TikTok needs to function are internet access, so that can be enabled by default, only to tiktok-owned domains. When someone hits “record” or whatever to make a video, that’s when a pop-up is displayed asking for camera/microphone permissions, which you can then hit the “enable” button on the pop-up to proceed. What is the problem with that? That’s how it works on iOS currently
Somewhat related: I also just have a different perspective on education in general. I think people don’t know enough about the consequences of their decisions on the environment, their own health and nutrition, their privacy, their economic well-being, their mental health, on and on. I think, in general, their should be more of a societal push for high-level education.I agree completely on all points. I just don’t think education is enough to see the type of change we both want to see
The only permissions TikTok needs to functionAssuming the ideal where companies only collect what they need.
That’s how it works on iOS currentlyFor TikTok, or on the OS as a whole? The Lyft app, for example, definitely pre-requests permissions. We don't want to go asking for access to the user's camera when they are trying to connect to a video call with our emergency help provider.
I’m not opposed to education. Who would be? I of course want people to know what is actually happening with their data and how it impacts them. But a large portion of people won’t care and if they do care, it won’t be enough to motivate them to spend the time and energy to setup digital privacy for themselves, all while foregoing the conveniences they are currently enjoying
Assuming the ideal where companies only collect what they need. This is what I’m saying. It has to be enforced by law lol of course we can’t depend on TikTok or anyone else just to be good guys
I'm just imagining a more-granular (read: longer) version of what is in place currently: you download and open an app, and it requests a bunch of permissions, some required, some not, before you can use the app.
What isn’t a permission to be granted/revoked is internet access. 3P tools are required for that
Assuming the ideal where companies only collect what they need.
This is what I’m saying. It has to be enforced by lawAnd I'm saying we aren't anywhere close to the kind of laws you are describing.
I just don’t think education is enough to see the type of change we both want to seeAnd I just don't think laws are enough to see the type of change we both want to see. All I'm saying is we need both, and giving up on education until the laws are in place to protect people from themselves is not a viable solution.
For TikTok, or on the OS as a whole?
On wholeMaybe I'm misunderstanding, but I just described a situation in which this is not true?
On iOS? No the first time the Lyft app tries to use location services it has to get your explicit permission. You can give it access to your location all the time, only while using the app, or not at all. And you can choose precise location or fuzzy location
Well I’m curious about what situation you described as not true? It sounds like I misunderstood something
The Lyft app, for example, definitely pre-requests permissions. We don't want to go asking for access to the user's camera when they are trying to connect to a video call with our emergency help provider. We request mic and video permissions before we need them. I was just trying to say that, even on iOS, an app can request all permissions up front, per my current understanding.
Oh I see. The Lyft app doesn’t even need those things at all. At least the rider app.
As I understand it, the permissions are requested the first time an app tries to use those services. So Lyft maybe tries to use them right at the start to get them up front? I have no idea. But you should go change that. You work at Lyft. You believe these things we’ve talked about in this thread. You have the ability to go make it right for Lyft users
It must be driver app only because the rider app has never requested microphone access from me
In this case, I agree with the reasoning, if a user wants to use the emergency help feature.
It must be driver app only because the rider app has never requested microphone access from meRider needs just mic, driver video + mic
Hmm. It’s never requested it from me. So that means it must only ask when I opt-in to emergency help?
That makes sense. Fumbling with permissions during an emergency wouldn’t be conducive to resolving said emergency

What are your favorite (most joy for the buck) subscriptions (digital and/or physical goods)?
Yeah, I'd say gym and Spotify have a pretty damn good rate of return. Other than that all that comes to mind is just supplements and streaming services which aren't as critical, but I still use them regularly,
Kagi Search. Mullvad VPN. Apple Music. Little Snitch.
Little snitch looks interesting. Have you found any concerning connections?
It was interesting to compare browsers. Basically every major browser I tried phoned home quite a bit. One of the things that prompted me to use Orion
When I find some free time, I plan to try out Orion and Kagi. They're on the "eventually" Todo list
@brandon which supplement subscriptions have you found yourself sticking with?
Brandon, Keenin, and I are on a Kagi family plan. LMK if you want to join!
I've settled into a consistent set of supplements at this point. I'll probably stick with it unless my doc wants me to change something. I have AG1 daily after my workout as a foundational supplement. It's expensive, but I enjoy it. Then it's just fish oil (DHA/EPA) and vitamin D in the morning, and Magnesium (L-Threonate) and Apigenin before bed. A couple times a week I'll also add Glycine and GABA to the sleep stack if I've worked out really hard or am trying to catch up on sleep / recover.
Love it. If you don't mind me asking, where do you get your magnesium from?
I think it’s because Brandon shared it with me recently though lol
Standing desk legs, potted plants, this laptop stand thing (I have a different brand)
I still have standing deck legs on my todo list. I need to finally get around to doing that.

No way! 😆 I would've been tempted to abandon them and make a new order lol
Warning ⚠️ thread about health/food, which I know can be tiresome/obnoxious/etc... to some, so feel free to ignore. Question is below
I'm finally getting around to learning about food, what I'm eating, etc... with the main goal to increase and stabilize energy levels. Secondary goal: long-term health effects.
As a group of motivated, data-driven people, I consider your opinions to be of very high quality, and this I was wondering if any of y'all have experience, info, etc... you'd be willing to share on the topic of diet/food that you've found to improve your life.
I found The Nutrition Source very interesting and ended up reading through most (if not all) of the site a couple months ago. It's a resource put together by a Harvard sub-school (the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Medicine) that is pretty much a massive meta-analysis of the current state of nutrition science and research. They do a great job of breaking down the basics but including more information and further reading if one would like to seek it out. They also have high-level overviews for the larger topics, but also do deep-dives into specific foods, like mushrooms, chia seeds, and coffee and tea.
They also consider things through multiple lenses. So, even if it would be fine for one's body to consume some amount of something, they may still recommend against it if it isn't necessary while being bad for the environment, for example.
The TL;DR is nothing new though (and in no particular order other than the order they came to mind):
Mostly pulling from various Huberman podcasts at this point:
Aside from what one eats, the next easiest thing to change is when one eats. Personally, I don't take caffeine after noon (usually two cups of coffee and maybe a cup of tea or two in the mornings), only eat between noon and 8pm, and try to take 80oz of water by 8pm (evenly, throughout the day) but no more liquids after that (except maybe one cup of tea to wind down, but hopefully done by 9pm).
The reasoning behind this routine is:
Lastly, there is when one eats what. I already kinda mentioned it, but one can go a lot deeper, if they so desire.
For example, caffeine works by blocking the receptors that are generally used to signal tiredness. If one drinks a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, for example, while there are still some of the tiredness compounds (adenosine) floating around unprocessed, they will stick around until the caffeine is processed and then bind with the receptor, which may lead to a bigger "crash" after the caffeine wears off.
Another example is that carbs generally make one more tired whereas protein might make one feel more energized (I think these are correct, but don't personally care very much, so grain of salt). This could be used to influence what one eats for their first meal of the day vs their last
Last thing to mention here is supplement intake timing. I don't take anything other than caffeine (through coffee and tea) and Vitamin D (via a pill, as recommended by my doctor, who said she recommends it to everyone in the PNW), so I don't know a lot on the subject. However, I have heard that some things should be taken in the morning alongside certain fats, for example, to increase the effectiveness of absorption.
That's pretty much the high-level of the info from my lens! I've found this all works really well for me now that I've been doing it for ~a year. I have no way to attribute any amount of "results" to my diet specifically, but this has been my healthiest year of my life in every measurable aspect that I can think of... Both my girlfriend (who has made less extreme changes) and I have noticed both our bodies and our brains grow accustomed to these changes, to the point where we actively enjoy "healthier" foods more and foods we used to eat regularly a lot less.
Since you mentioned energy levels, I will say that I have more energy than ever, but, again, I have no way to attribute that directly to my diet. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of activity a week, where 1 minute of vigorous activity counts for 2 minutes of moderate activity. I regularly go for walks, runs, climbs, hikes, do yoga, and workout and my Garmin watch tracks my "intensity minutes" for me and says I got 522 minutes last week and 432 minutes the week before, while also saying I have energy to spare most days.
Final thing I want to say is to re-emphasize that this is through the lens of my life and my research, and some people have near-opposite views. I haven't personally looked into why some people think pig hearts and butter are the key to longevity (referencing somebody in my girlfriend's PT program who believes just as strongly as I do that their diet is the right one), but I'd love to hear about it if anybody has!
Wow! Im impressed with the incredibly thorough response!
All of the disclaimers you made were all on point 💯 I don't take anything as gospel, but rather as yet another data point on what is working for someone.
The most interesting dichotomy I've observed in my research is between primary-plant vs primarily-animal. There are many voices on both sides, and its taking a long time to wade through all of the data they're presenting.
Definitely share any reputable sources you find that describe a meat-based diet as the healthiest, I'm very curious!
Personally, I've just looked for a high-level "these foods seem good, these seem worse", rather than a specific diet to follow, and most sources that take this perspective (The Nutrition Source, Huberman, other various professors and doctors, various books that I have not actually read) seem to pretty much say the only encouraged animal product is fish a couple times a week. On top of that, farming animals is just horrible for the environment, which alone is nearly enough to convince me, personally.
I definitely will share what I find 🙂 I'm still in the weeds and doing research when I find the spare time, so no solid conclusions yet.
Personally, I've just looked for a high-level "these foods seem good, these seem worse", rather than a specific diet to follow💯 While "Diets" are certainly helpful heuristics, I totally agree it's important to understand the underlying food itself.
only encouraged animal product is fish a couple times a week. This is the part I am currently researching to reverse-engineer, to understand what is behind the claim. I think we in this Slack are are similar, in that our engineering mindsets don't take claims at face value, and want to dig down to first principles. So far, it seems the claim is based on that saturated fats increase high-density LDL cholesterol, which increases likelihood of cardiovascular disease and death. However, I find many meta-analyses over the past decade, revisiting past studies concluding that saturated fats should be reduced, concluding the studies have very weak data and call for them to be revisited. Still doing more digging right now on this topic...
On top of that, farming animals is just horrible for the environmentI totally agree, as it relates to factory farming (or whatever is the right term for poor-animal conditions, water pollution, etc...). I'm still undecided on whether all animal farming should be avoided. I'm looking for any data to help make a conclusion on that point. In the meantime, to not support factory farming, I've switched to only buying pasture-raised chicken, and eggs from my backyard chickens. As for beef, very soon I'll be getting my first 1/2 cow from a farmer up the road who practices pasture-raised, regenerative farming.

The surreal life of a professional bridesmaid
She knew, once she walked into that bridal suite, that anything could happen… Once, after a ring-bearer dog defecated in the aisle, she scooped up the dog poop with her bare hands to prevent the bride from soiling her dress.
Tara and Kevin Mark had an unusual ring bearer at their wedding in Pennsylvania
When the time came to exchange rings at her wedding ceremony in San Diego last year, Jessica Huete donned a leather glove with a piece of quail meat attached. Moments later, a falcon swooped down, landing on the bride’s forearm to deliver the silver bands and devour the snack.

Sad people are so in need of money they pimp out their young daughters. Also fuck Meta for not giving a fuck
Yeah this type of stuff is awful. Removing child exploitation was the top priority set by Elon when he took over Twitter. I remember hearing some child exploitation experts remarking how much of an improvement they saw on twitter, and how quickly, after Elon's purchase. They implied that is can be improved if the platforms cared to prioritize it. I'm no expert on the topic, but it was interested to hear that story.
Yeah, he did say that, but then he fired what like 80% of his employees? That has to have hit safety/trust teams. Hard to rid the platform of child abuse/pornography when there are 10 people left to do it instead of 100+ or whatever
What if those 80% of engineers were supporting child abuse?? 🤯 🤯
That’s true I didn’t consider every possible case
Probably fewer engineers, highly motivated to solve the problem is more effective than visa versa.

- skip to the end for short cut of measurements, although it will vary depending on the exact brands you buy, since the concentration of the mineral could be different, so you may want to do the conversions yourself.
potassium
magnesium
disclaimer: I didn't do research on which potassium or magnesium to buy. I used the ones should had, since they had enough reviews. I did get a second source, to make sure she wasn't totally crazy.
used pink salt i already had. Took like 5mins to measure out a month+ worth of mixture. Probably even faster the next time I do it.
I had been holding out on the packets, and it finalllyyyyy dawned on me, it shouldn't be hard to make it myself. I was pleasantly surprised how much cheaper it was. I wasn't expecting such a large difference.
Yeah, I've been drinking the Liquid IVs for a while now so I'm definitely interested in comparing the ingredients of a cheaper alternative.
She uses the ingredients and ratios from the LMNT brand. It's just the 3 minerals. If I recall correctly, liquid iv has some more ingredients, but I haven't looked in a while, so might be misremembering.
With just the minerals, you def need to flavor with lemon juice or something, unless you like the taste of salt water 😄
Yeah, I'd imagine it doesn't taste very good. What have you been flavoring yours with?
its 80% salt, so yeah, tastes like salt water. I just put it in about 16oz of water with some lemon juice. I might iterate on the flavoring. I've heard of people addding crystal light powder
Or something like this, for simpler ingredients
Ah yes, I have done this before, but mainly for a pre-workout. It tasted awful and didn't work as well. I will definitely try this electrolyte recipe though. Seems easy enough and good with the right flavor.
@spkaplan let us know what flavoring you go with, I'll probably try the lime powder from Bulk Supps

What is this exactly? There's not much background info available on the website. Just channels!
Yeah it’s like a YouTube channel scroller, kinda seems like a nod to the cable tv days. I was surprised at the quality of content
Yeah, I wonder how the content is selected and if it's on a predetermined loop. Pretty cool though! Just watched the end of a UFC match as well as a science special.

Is anyone here skilled in front-end? I will pay $100 if someone can show me how to reliably get around the paywall used by The Cook Political Report:
e.g.
Normally I use the Bypass Paywalls extension. When a site hasn’t worked by default with it, I’ve mostly been able to add some custom configuration to get it to work, but I have been unable to with this website. The archivers like the wayback machine and archive.is don’t work either.
It doesn't look like you can. They aren't pushing the entire article to the frontend while the paywall is active. It's server side validation.
Unless there is someway to spoof a valid cookie or something, there isn't much you can do from the frontend. That being said, I'm not really familiar with how those paywall bypassing tools work.
This was my fear. Thanks. And good to know $100 is enough to get your interest
I am not sure what to make of this:
President Trump Town Hall in Oaks, PA
It’s an awful long time to be up on stage dancing to music: 0:59:00 - 1:37:45 (the end). 40 minutes. Gotta give it up for the crowd though, barely anyone left!
Haha yeah I find the music choices are some of the most interesting parts of his rallies/town halls/events

Title: Learning Not to Trust the All-In Podcast in Ten Minutes
Before I've read the full post, I will comment on the reaction from the author to stop consuming a particular forum due to something allegedly incorrect being presented in the forum. I think this is such a bummer when someone's reaction is to leave a discussion rather than trying to join it and add to it ultimately resulting in a better truth-seeking conversation. If you take that approach to the limit we will all end up more fragmented segmented and only being part of conversations in which we agree with everything said 100%. Taking the other approach to the limit will results in the best ideas and most accurate ideas winning out. I'm glad he wrote the article, but instead of opting out going forward, I'd rather see him strive to get his post in front of the eyes of the guys on the podcast.
Excuse typos and bad grammar. I'm dictating to my phone while on a walk.
I guess. The post got huge attention online and he addresses the team. I’m guessing they may have seen this by now
I'd love them to address it! That's how conversations get better and we all benefit.
Yeah if you see All-in acknowledge it please share
Will do! They may learn something by learning they made a mistake, or maybe they add more info to their point and we learn why they were right. Either way, it's a win.
I don’t know what they could add to make it so they were right. Like this is stuff from my Econ program. But you never know
It's just as good of a win if they say "wow, you're right, great job catching that! Now, how does that change our previous conclusions and what it means for the state of the economy...". And then their whole audience learns something too.
i just feel so strongly, that over the course of having a conversation (no matter the forum), data will be misinterpreted, or insufficient data will be considered, incorrect conclusions will be made, but hopefully the truth is reached by more people joining the conversation, or new data coming out, etc...
This is all assuming it is done in good faith. If they lied or purposely misrepresented the data, that's a different story. Not listening to them after that is totally reasonable.
I agree they really should come forth so they don’t misinform their audience
The tough part is getting it surfaced to them. There is so much out there on the internet and getting through the noise is challenging. Hopefully it gets enough attention that it floats to the top.
The author of the post asks the question of whether is this malicious intent or honest mistake so he’s thinking along the lines as you
Well it was on the front page of Hacker News for a while. I suppose you could email Chamath and the team
I feel like they might browse HN. Although they are more finance bro than tech bro
IIUC, I think QE is the crux of the difference in their opinions. The author disregards QE "Putting aside the comment about quantitative easing, which feels irrelevant", but chamath obviously thinks QE needs to be accounted for. With that assumption, the next question is where did chamath get the '85% that includes QE' figure. Is it from the table provided by the author (and that figure does include QE), or is he 85% and 0.85 a coincidence.
Not sure I follow the QE comments. What does Chatham say about QE exactly? It doesn’t change the analysis from what I understand
He is saying you should count QE as government spending. He says that in reaction to another graph Jason puts up, which only shows "net outlays", which chamath claims doesn't include QE. That graph indicates gov spending being 20% of GDP. The author uses the 0.85 number, which is about 30%. That difference seems to indicate QE accounted for 10%, bringing it to the 30% number reached by the author. If so, chamath probably misread the 0.85 figure as 85%.
Pretty interesting reporting + pictures on a topic I’ve never thought about before!
I wonder if this “Future Trans Arctic Shipping Route” is solely a consequence of climate change? I’ve never heard of it before. Don’t love the idea of anyone being incentivized to advance global warming. idk. the military stuff is main the content
Oh yeah there are three articles listed on the page
This is good reading material inbetween 1:1s today. So many 10ish minute gaps between 1:1s that are otherwise useful periods of time.
Fucking DOGE?! Are you kidding me this administration is a fucking joke! Be prepared for a level of unbridled corruption the likes of which have never been seen before
The department of government efficiency huh starting off strong with two men for one job give me a fucking break
I mean the corruption is obvious. Elon is literally the owner/leader of multiple companies that have billions and billions of dollars in government contracts
And Vivek Ramaswamy is a charlatan plain and simple
Two ceos - What's the real concern here? Doing anything significant in this world, whether in govt, business, or otherwise takes many people. Every department in the govt has many people. Would it be any different if only one of them was "leading" DOGE and the other one was just working with them?
I mean the corruption is obvious.... - I guess it comes down to whether one thinks Elon is going to optimize for changes that benefit his companies, or optimize for using tax dollars efficiently, reducing the deficit, and whether his companies may benefit indirectly. Luckily, they plan to post it all online, so we will have more visibility than usual to make our judgement.
I don't know Vivek too well, besides what I've seen in interviews, so I don't have much to say there.
Two interesting angles to look at this from, the WHAT (i.e. goals/outcomes), and the HOW. What do you think about the WHAT/goals (reducing the deficit, and striking a better balance of regulation for home construction public transportation construction, etc...)?
Sorry I left for an errand I will read more closely when I’m back but the two CEOs thing was just a joke about their purported “efficiency” purposes
No rush! I've got meetings on and off, and Soundstack is always a nice escape from work periodically 🙂
the two CEOs thing was just a joke about their purported “efficiency” purposesSo much is lost in written word 😄
Although I think in any non-political context you’d be hard pressed to find a strong argument in favor of two CEOs. Lyft did that for most of its life and it’s in the toilet
Yeah, agree. It would be better to have 1 person in charge for sure.
I think I read an article about the Lyft 2 ceo period. Before that I had never even considered. Doesn't seem like a winning strategy. You only have 1 ceo now, right? Salesforce's 2 cofounders, one is ceo, the other is cto. Maybe they knew something, or just got lucky. I could also imagine the dynamic could be awkward like that, but they seem to make it work.
I still don't understand how doge is related. I saw the news about trump's choices for gov't efficiency, but what's doge got to do with it?
Yeah Lyft had two cofounders who then each became co-CEO. They each had areas they focused on but still idk why they chose that option. And yes, only one CEO now. The board kicked Logan and JZ out.
@brandon the organization being set up is “Department of Government Efficiency” aka DOGE
I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”).
Well that's an unfortunate acronym facepalm And I hate that he capitalized "Great" lol it feels religious or something.
he capitalized "Great" lol it feels religious or something.Yeah, it sounds like someone just transcribed Trump speaking lol
I can understand and respect the desire to put proven leaders in charge of something like this (it's been discussed a lot how nobody talented or good at their job wants to be in politics), although it does feel like there is a lot of opportunity for bias and corruption. I guess we'll have to see how they all approach having one foot in government, and the other foot in personal business.
What do you think about the WHAT/goals (reducing the deficit, and striking a better balance of regulation for home construction public transportation construction, etc...)?I would be down to have another call like we did a few weeks ago, but I will try to be concise here.
@brandon exactly right. I would go even further though in that I don’t understand the desire to replace public servants with for-profit CEOs. The federal government is wildly different in its objectives and purpose. There is not monetary profit goal in the federal government and indeed the opposite. The government should not be afraid to spend. The US government in particular is the sovereign leader of the worlds fiat currency. This fact means its finances has totally different behaviors/interactions/constraints than any private company finances
“Reducing the deficit” should never be a goal in and of itself.Agree, "reduce the deficit" is not an end goal. Is it fair to have a goal of avoiding reaching a point where so much of govt spending is just paying interest on the national debt, reaching a point at which it impedes the govt spending on real stuff? I think that is the crux concern I have heard.
I hear voices on both sides of this debate, and I'm trying to figure out which argument makes more sense.
Well, you could look at historical debt levels and deficit spending under administrations who campaigned on or are known for being deficit hawks. You’ll find they they stop talking about it once they’re in office and even tend to inflate the debt more than the administrations they were previously accusing of being fiscally irresponsible
For sure, they always talk the talk, but have NEVER walked the walk.
I'm more trying to understand if we continue with this deficit runrate, and without some sizeable increase in GDP growth, what happens as interest payments on the debt make up a larger and larger percentage of govt spending? It will eventually impede on spending on other things, right? I assume there is some counter to that point from the folks who are not worried about the debt, but I haven't been able to find it yet.
My opinion is that the general public should never be concerned or even think about federal deficit. Odds are you’ll never meet anyone who has a concrete understanding of how it all works. And the politicians you hear yelling about it only do so when trying to get the electorate enraged about something, and then proceed to spend indiscriminately anyways when their party is in power. There are people who are responsible for worrying about this. Let them worry.
Fair enough, they can worry about it. But can they also explain why it's not a problem?
And the politicians you hear yelling about it only do so when trying to get the electorate enraged about something, and then proceed to spend indiscriminately anyways when their party is in power.Agree. I'm not defending anyone who has campaigned on this point.
I’m more trying to understand if we continue with this deficit runrate, and without some sizeable increase in GDP growth, what happens as interest payments on the debt make up a larger and larger percentage of govt spending? It will eventually impede on spending on other things, right?GDP growth is an important factor here. It goes up so it’s fine. Another important factor is the inflation rate. The federal reserve targets a background inflation of ~2%. Because we always have some level of inflation, over time our fixed debt gets eaten away
But can they also explain why it’s not a problem?I assume they could if they were asked. AFAIK they’re not the ones saying it is a problem.
GDP growth is an important factor here. It goes up so it’s fine. Another important factor is the inflation rate.IIUC, the size of the debt is growing much faster than inflation and GDP growth.
Right now if I’ve read the numbers right, interest payments are only 14% of US government spending
My understanding is the trend is going up quickly. How much were they 5 or 10 years ago?
To clarify, if we can keep spending close to inflation + GDP growth, I agree, we are good.
Oh yeah there are two significant policy events that have contributed to our now permanent state of debt. The Bush Jr. tax cuts and the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Without appropriate reductions in spending, these things have helped create a new baseline for debt levels
So i guess it's a matter of whether we can tax our way out of it, or just cut spending, or some of both?
They just slashed government revenue while, in both of those administrations, had major spending increases. Bush the wars and Trump covid
I don’t know why we need to get out of it. Why is 15% or even 20% of our budget going to interest payments a problem?
But still yeah we need to tax more and optionally cut spending somewhere. I personally think we need to be taxing the wealthy wayyyyyy more and also more effectively. We don’t even collect the taxes we ostensibly require of them. The ProPublica reporting from a few years ago revealed the tax statements of the top 0.0001% and in doing so revealed Warren Buffet paid like an effective tax rate of something like 0.01%, others like Musk, Bloomberg paid 0.0%, and Bezos even got a payment from the IRS of like $4000 or something
I don’t know why we need to get out of it.Depends how fast it is increasing, right? Even currently, it's 15% of all of our tax dollars doing absolutely nothing productive. They are paying the cost of us having needed money in the past when we didn't have it. If I was spending 15% of my paycheck on interest, that would be wasteful, no? You wouldn't recommend I cut spending on restaurants for a bit? Also, I could probably go out and get a better job (i.e. tax more), i agree.
But still yeah we need to tax more and optionally cut spending somewhere.I don't disagree with taxing more. We can obviously tax up until it starts to drive down tax revenue too far.
I'm mainly trying to understand if there is a counterargument to whether a larger percentage of govt spending each year being spent on interest payments is damaging to us. I don't see how it doesn't handicap us by not being able to spend the money on useful things.
Great discussion! We're that much closer to solving the country's problems, or determining there is no problem at all! 😄 I learn more every day
If I was spending 15% of my paycheck on interest, that would be wasteful, no? You wouldn’t recommend I cut spending on restaurants for a bit? Also, I could probably go out and get a better job (i.e. tax more), i agree.Yeah but your household budgeting is nothing like the US government budgeting. A lot of people think about it this way because it’s familiar to us, but I don’t think it’s a comparison that can be made.
I’m mainly trying to understand if there is a counterargumentlol and i’m still waiting for an argument on why it actually is a problem in the first place
lol and i’m still waiting for an argument on why it actually is a problem in the first placefair. I'll see if I can dig up data to show that the rate of increase is high. if so, the problem is that the number will increase until we can't pay for other stuff like medicare. If that graph/data exists, I'd like to find the counterargument to that.
I know it’s high. I don’t know why it’s a problem if we stop at like 20% of all spending
For a nice introduction to government spending:
For more detailed data:
For various economic indicators, including GDP, debt, interest rates, etc:
Example: Total Public Debt as Percent of Gross Domestic Product
ProPublica leaked IRS files:
Sorry I’m trying to find some pieces about the Bush+Trump tax cuts that I read. I thought they were from AEI but I’m not finding them. I’ll get back to this.
Fine, we can drop the household comparison. I'll focus on if the % is increasing.
Yeah, if we stop at 20%, then let inflation and GDP growth eat it away, that is fine. But we need to stop it at 20% or some number.
I think I can agree it should stop at some point, but I don’t have a very strong sense of what point is the max
Ok cool, then I guess it comes down to whether taxes can be increased sufficiently to stop it at some point, or spending has to decrease as well. Would need to crunch numbers to determine that.
I just remembered. There is one thing I’ve heard from Vivek that I agree with: high school students should be required to pass the US citizenship test in order to get their diploma
Props for being able to agree with someone on a topic when you otherwise disagree with them on most topics 👏 I totally agree, I love the high school civics exit exam idea.
they say they aren’t getting paid, elon and musk. so we can trust them
yeah lol i guess optically they have no real choice besides forfeiting any wages
they wouldn't even notice if they got a salary for doing doge. 100k is a drop in the ocean to 300B lol
they say they aren’t getting paid, elon and musk. so we can trust themThat kind of feels like an insulting rebuttal. I don't think there is any concern about them profiting from their position directly via salary facepalm
The topic of gov't spending and deficit is really interesting, but also super complicated because they literally control the currency, interest rates, and it's on such a macro scale. I agree that it's pretty hard to reason about in terms of monetary concepts we are comfortable with. I won't pretend to understand it, but will drop some historical data that I found in case others find it interesting.
The debt seems to be most commonly presented as a percentage of GDP as opposed to gov't spending directly. If anyone has insight into why that is, I'd be interested.
That american finance guide is great. It’s what I share first with anyone
I think the solution is to repeal the bush and trump tax cuts. the pgpf article says that historically debt increases were associated with one-off events, but now we have a “structural mismatch between spending and revenue” like jeez how did we get here 🫠
Well we must have fixed it because I hear the economy is doing better than ever all of a sudden 🥳
I think the solution is to repeal the bush and trump tax cutsI'd be curious to know how much additional revenue this would bring in.
I love to see people agreeing on some things
What did Musk say? It’s sad that it requires a celebrity to say what has been news already now for several years, and it still won’t likely matter. But yeah would love to see this particular issue get addressed for real
Not sure the exact tweet he was referring to, but sounds like it was a criticism of the pentagon not passing another audit
Well his involvement sure escalated quickly 🤨
Elon Musk Met With Iran’s U.N. Ambassador, Iranian Officials Say https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/14/world/middleeast/elon-musk-iran-trump.html
I like how NYT has an entire section of their nav bar dedicated to this question lol
He is now an efficiency advisor and foreign policy expert! I mean fake it until you make it I guess? It's worked for him in the past! I'm starting to get the feeling that this is part of a more long term political strategy on his part.
lol you think so? I feel like NYT suffers from bothsides-ism and dont use very scathing language. Could be my own bias though
Just based on the articles I have consumed. Possible I have missed neutral/positive articles. Well before elon's political involvement, he entered the cross hairs of the left. It was sad to see, someone working on progressive causes like sustainable energy and decoupling us from Russia (w.r.t. space access) and who had always been on the left, be turned on by the left. It was a disillusioning experience.
The left regularly gets in their own way
Without context, my guess is that this is a "firehose" of recent social media posts?
Holy cow! I'm familiar with bluesky but haven't heard anything about it from folks. DO you use it? pros/cons to X or other platforms?
Unable to comment because I haven’t used it myself. Just found this nice little website and was intrigued
I really ought to move! Out of all downtown Seattle, my census tract is marked as high risk 😬
After yesterday's convo, someone smashed my car window and slashed the tire while I was on a walk. He was dumb enough to not realize he read being recorded the whole time by the car's camera. I'll share the video clips sometime soon. License plate, car make and model, his face, everything on camera.
No clue. There were car seats in the car, but nothing else interesting. Slashing the tire is a real question mark
I hope the cops can charge him. The legit license plate is registered to a woman in sedro wooley, and the cop said that might make it tricky for them to chase it down. I had to hold back from rolling my eyes, since that seems like a perfectly good lead
But I guess it not being registered to him, and being a different city poses bureaucratic challenges
Yeah what they ought to be able to go off that. Just ask the woman who this might be?
Yeah insurance will cover it, but my deductible is pretty high, so I'll be paying for it likely
What an idiot. Nothing stolen and no clear motive? He must really hate Tesla. Did he use a slingshot to break the window? That's creative.
Yeah, slingshot and a rock from the ground. It workied really well!
I think he must have thought there was something in the car, but it was just a bunch of kid toys and junk lol.
He was definitely doing it for $, based on him scoping out the parking lot for a long time. He was actually there (in a different parking spot) when I arrived, but I didn't think anything of him.
This is our WA air quality map. We have a bunch of green healthy levels and then we have one unhealthy 117. Even the closest readings next to it our healthy greens. I wonder what that place is? Apparently there was a toxic chemical spill there back in like 1991 (plus nearby hazwaste site). Can’t find anything else. Would a toxic chemical spill fuck up the air quality even 30 years later? Even Redfin shows it as “extreme” risk.
In 2011, a Puget Sound Toxics Assessment study estimated that approximately 230 tons of petroleum products are spilled annually in the 12 counties that border Puget Sound. The sooner Ecology knows about a spill - the quicker a team can launch a rapid, aggressive, and well-coordinated response.
Unfortunately, many spills are unreported. Ecology receives roughly 4,000 reports of oil and hazardous materials spills each year. All reports are tracked to completion - which results in about 750 yearly field responses.
A single quart of oil has the potential to foul more than 100,000 gallons of water.
Apparently I have five free subscriptions to Slow Boring that I can give away. Does anyone want one?
It requires your email address. If that’s okay with you, lmk which email you’d like me to use

Thanks again! I've heard of him, but haven't read his work, as far as I remember
I wish I had the skill to create stuff like this easily
The House passed H.R. 5349: Crucial Communism Teaching Act in a vote of 327-62 last week.
To ensure that high school students in the United States—
(A) learn that communism has led to the deaths of over 100,000,000 victims worldwide;
(B) understand the dangers of communism and similar political ideologies; and
(C) understand that 1,500,000,000 people still suffer under communism.
Also seems like a very broad brush to paint “communism” when no country/economy has ever truly been communist. But we all know it’s a dumb bill/law
I thought the minority/dissenting view in the committee report was strong, the committee hearing pro-arguments weak, and the general roll call vote speeches (@19:50) weird.
Surprised it passed with such a majority

I thought this video was a good wake up call. So many parents (as well as people in general) are not conscious of the digital footprint they are forcing onto others.

Very well made. I'm already on board, but I'm sure this video will help convince others.
I’m glad this type of thing is getting made. I hope it spreads around. I constantly lecture my family about this. I’ve thought about making a video like this one but just of my family members, doing something they didn’t do (obviously) but only to demonstrate how easy it is. Or a scam phone call using one of their voices. Anything to break through the apathy
Your digital footprint forced onto us are the utm trackers in the link 🙂
Indeed. I use software to remove them. Orion browser copies clean links. Velja (Mac OS) removes them from copied links, in addition to its other utility. And then on mobile I wrote a shortcut that runs when I share URLs to remove trackers first
I tried it for a bit. I had some frustrating bugs with work extensions that caused me to revert back to Chrome. And then I use Firefox for personal stuff on Windows and Android.
I’m a lifetime Orion+ member. Hope the browser works for you!
meaning you joined Slack, or you have access to some slack ai tools, or...?
Ah cool! I think I've been using them as well, in our internal work slack workspaces.
Yeah, I think we're a bit late to the party. My company has been cautious about AI in general.
It’s actually PTSD lol I forgot I installed it and then some time later it jumped out and screamed at me
Honestly might be the worst jump scare of my life
I guess it worked! You should have stayed away from that website like your prior self intended!
Does anyone have any experience with bookmarking type apps/services? My current situation isn't scaling. Wondering if you have any thoughts on available solutions.
My wishlist:
Some options I'm looking at (in no particular order):
I haven't looked into this space at all. I don't have anything to offer
I use a horrible Frankenstein of solutions, including bookmarks and Obsidian
Yet again, if I didn't have kids, this is a space I would spend time improving my workflow.
Turns out life is a lot easier with toddlers when there isn't a tv in the living room (no judgement or whatever, just has been good so far in our experience). So, now I have a 50" tv to do something with in my office. Ideas?
Use it as a permanent grafana monitor - that won't breed new anxieties lolz
Incredible to see gov and university websites hosting this trash
I wouldn't call it a "minecraft clone" but that is a pretty cool tech demo. It would be more cool if he explained the process of building it or provided the script used to generate the html.
Good point about html generation. That part is doing a lot of the heavy lifting!

Yesterday and today some number from the Philippines tried to scam me by impersonating the Washington state DMV
