I staunchly disagree with this article. The world isn't even close to automating away software engineers. And to suggest that machine learning is what automates pieces of software development is fucking laughable.
This guy has no idea what he is talking about. I haven't looked at the data, but I would bet money that you cannot just attend a three month bootcamp and then call yourself a software engineer, let alone get a job at a top tech company. Software engineering is difficult as fuck. You must have understanding AND practical experience in such a wide breadth of stuff to be good at it.

Yeah, we hired a girl who went through a 6 month bootcamp (she's gone now and I have her desk/job) but apparently it didn't work out very well and we aren't planning on hiring from bootcamps anymore. And furthermore, I disagree with the article as well. I feel like it's still a "science fiction" type concept that they are trying to sell.
Yeah the media in general seems to not understand what exactly it is or how it works, and even more so where we are with it. I'd say that the people who are scared of it and the ones with the least understanding, but there are some tech leaders who express concerns over it (e.g. Elon Musk)
I always find these artifical "caps" annoying. It's frustrating to think that you have a vehicle with the power to go farther and longer and but are only restricted by a piece of code that says to limit your battery power unless you pay extra to "unlock" the whole battery.

Haha finally someone else that binged it like Kelli and I! They do the cliffhangers so well. It was really good. I liked the character development and the change of group context and what not. I would say it was on par with season 1. I saw somewhere that season 3 won't be out until early 2019 though which seems so far away...
Yeah I heard the same about season 3 being 2019. Given season 2 took 15 months after season 1 it makes sense.
But yeah I liked it as well. I felt it was a bit cheesy on the kids romance storylines but overall great season. I feel like they upped the gore/violence a bit which made it extra seat-clenching

We provide the backend to make it so your company can stream videos/live events.
i.e. Steam uses us in their Steam Application for their videos. They pop the player in their app and we facilitate all the requests that player makes to the video content, etc.

And will young people even buy self-driving cars? I imagine they’d be expensive af. But then I also think maybe their main demographic is young people with too much money so they pay to go everywhere? Maybe those people would drive self-driving cars?
This might be a rough analogy, but when touch-screen was first kind-of a thing, it was restaurants (from what I recall). You know touch menus and all that. And I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the restaurant industry trying to outlaw individual consumers from owning touch-screen technology. Maybe there wasn’t much vision for its future? Idk I just have a hard time understanding the reasoning behind such a law that Uber, Lyft, & friends are trying to push.
I think the idea is that they can completely control the traffic flow through the city. The cars can move around with awareness of every other car in the city using algorithms to optimize flow. At least that was my vision of it.
It makes sense. I mean you could look at it as all Ford self-driving cars are part of a fleet, so you could buy a Ford self-driving car. Seems like no one would be a lone fleet unless they created/programmed one on their own. Which, yes, would be dangerous.

I think you need to think bigger than Google maps though. Google maps tells you what current traffic conditions are but it can't predict where those cars will be in 5 minutes. These systems could know where every other car is and will be. So the system could send 20 cars/min down a road with an optional flow of 20 cars/min. I just think that one entity driving 10,000 cars will be more efficient than 10,000 entities driving one car each. Or they are just trying to take advantage of people.. who knows.
I don’t think it would be a centralized system, you need to decentralize the computation and logistics of each car it seems like. And to do that optimally you probably need something like a blockchain, but with much less overhead. I.e. each car has a ledger of every other cars current location/destination. And in this context, they mean a fleet to be akin to a block chain. The car needs to be a part of some decentralized network from which other cars can find it. Just playing with ideas here though.💡

Yeah there was a hiring freeze in the retail/marketplace business. Devices and AWS unaffected. But every year the bottom 6-7% of performers are put on PIPs and most of them end up getting cut. This annual practice was temporarily suspended last year because HR was trying something new. Jeff B didn’t like the new system so the old stack ranking is back.
Internal chatter suggests the last year break in firing low performers in combination with aggressive hiring has resulted in bloated operations. Maybe that’s why it’s news? Not sure. But I don’t think it has to do with shifting resources to other business opportunities. Orgs outside of Retail are taking internal transfers from Retail but the layoffs are just business as usual, at least from what it seems to me.

I read about this a couple years back but had kind of forgot about it. I didn't realize it was so close to implementation! This is very scary indeed. The fact that the scoring system is a black box means that the government can use it to control people regardless of the circumstances. Your score could plummet over night and there would be nothing you could do about it and no explanation necessary. Terrifying.

And yeah, I agree with your point on them not owning the code. I don't think there's anything to be afraid of. Bitbucket is also owned by a corporation so I don't see why it's any different. I see an argument being made for moving your repos over to GitLab since it's open source on an MIT license so it's more transparent but I don't see the argument for Bitbucket.
I mean if you can't see the benefit of more private repos.. as Github only allows one personal private git repo and bitbucket allows more.

My understanding is that it is airbnb for property managers/renters. It is basically an amenity that an apartment building can offer to its long-term renters, so they can rent their place out when they are on vacation. Today is it always against your lease to put your apartment on airbnb, but this would make it allowed. Both the longterm renter and property manager would benefit, because they would split it.
I would definitely be more interested in an apartment building if I had the option to rent it out when I was not there

I have a little bit. It feels like they just put their own skin over chrome lol you can import all of your bookmarks and extensions and it has the same developer tools. It sounds like Edge might have better memory management and privacy settings though. I need to explore it some more.
I've been using it for a couple days now and haven't really noticed. It's actually really nice. I haven't felt the need to immediately switch back to chrome like I have in the past lol

I forgot to post about this earlier. @andelink Is there talk w/in Lyft about Tesla’s presumed upcoming ride-hailing network?
I don’t know if it is confirmed, but it makes a ton of sense. Hypothesis: Tesla starts a ride hailing service soon with human drivers and customer’s cars to start learning the ropes of the ride hailing business. Once they crack full autonomy, they don’t need human drivers anymore, and can just use customer’s cars and split it 50/50 (or something) with the car owner. Even with sharing with the owner, without a driver, they can under cut ride hailing services that use a driver (uber/lyft).
Of course the big assumption is that they crack full self-driving first, but it is looking more and more like they will win that race.
I think the scenario you describe heavily depends on their ability to turn any car (namely the user/passenger) into a self-driving car.
Lyft partners with self-driving car companies to plop their tech into Lyft’s fleet of vehicles and network
They have the ability to do that. Surprisingly, they have even sent updates that increase the car’s range and reduce the braking distance
They have mastered over the air updates. They send new updates that improve how much the car can driver itself on a regular basis
So I could put a Tesla device in my 2005 Hyundai Accent to turn it into a self-driving car?

Once they crack full autonomy, they don’t need human drivers anymore, and can just use customer’s cars and split it 50/50 (or something) with the car owner.
I think the scenario you describe heavily depends on their ability to turn any car (namely the user/passenger) into a self-driving car.

Yeah, not currently. It is definitely predicated on them ramping up production and continuing to bring down the price of the vehicles.
EVs will become cheaper than gas cars in the near-ish future, and when that happens the transition to electric will happen quickly and more will be on the road.
What I was trying to say earlier is that Lyft L5 is working on a sort of plug-and-play self-driving car technology so that you can take any car and put the autonomous system in it to convert it to a self-driving car
No doubt once EVs are economical and autonomous cars are realistic then yeah that's a game changer to the ride-hailing industry. Once autonomous cars are realistic no one will own cars. You just call one when you need it and it will arrive in <10 minutes and then you're off to your destination. Then that car goes and does it again for someone else and so on and so forth in an effort to maintain high utilization rates across all vehicles in the world

It's tough to say, but Tesla has the most data (roughly 3.5billion autonomous miles driven) vs waymo's 20million. I think their lead is due to the fact that all privately owned teslas send data back to Tesla.

When I clicked order now, I was brought to a screen where I could have completed my order. However, comcast is still doing fine, so until they bring the price down, and/or enable you to bring your dish with you when traveling (e.g. camping) I'll stay with comcast. As soon as it is closer in price, I would probably do starlink. I'd rather support spacex than comcast.
Starlink isn't designed to serve densly populated areas, so it may never make sense to get it while you live in the Seattle area.

Simply put, so far they have said:
- wider battery is more efficient, but has problem with getting too hot. They solved the heat problem with the “tabless design”
- I can’t follow all of the factory stuff, but the one part I do understand is… “dry” is better than “wet”. The current way of making batteries uses this “wet” technology, which is slow, power intensive, and takes lots of floor space to dry it.

Google is doing you a service by storing a pre rendered version of the web page without ads on edge nodes near your current location for faster load times.
Most of the time when you are viewing these pages you don't even notice because they only appear on mobile and the url isn't even exposed.
This is something that content producers opt into in order to better serve a mobile audience. Google isn't forcing them or doing it without their consent. Although I would expect that google probably gives preference to amp content in mobile search results because they want to encourage it and it's a better experience for the user.
I do agree that sharing the urls sucks though. They need to figure that part out.

Well, currently, I've not seen actual data on how well it works, I've only heard claims from people with opposing opinions. Like I've said a couple times, I'm more opposed to the entity behind the product rather than the product itself because I'm scared of the lack of freedom and diversity a monopoly brings. And prioritizing or hiding websites based on how much data they feed you is a bit scummy.

Yeah, I think we just disagree on the motives here. Coming from a background where SEO was a big focus I think it's impossible to build a good website without providing google with the metadata they need to understand your content. There is a ton of metadata and labels that you have to apply throughout a site if you want it to be indexed and presented with priority for certain searches.
So I think that although you aren't wrong that they are prioritizing content that feeds them more information, I think that's inevitable and it's part of the game. Google is a search engine and it needs to understand your content.
The reason they are doing this is because they want people to engage with more content. Faster load times means lower bounce rates. So I think Google's motivation is to increase engagement. Kyle, you said this benefits them. I'm sure it does, but what did you mean by that exactly?

No, the data is coming from the user, who is now accessing a Google server instead of the owner of the site. Any data that the user wants to give the site is now being directed through Google first.
Google is free to get as much metadata from the site as they want, no issue with that.

@r.taylor That's true. You are accessing the data from a google server now, but only if you used the google search engine to get there. It's a caching solution that I personally don't think we should really be surprised about in this era. If you don't want google to know how you are browsing the web, you shouldn't be using chrome or google search in the first place.

Haha yeah, that's a fair point. Pulling the real url out of the amp url on mobile would be a tedious task. What search engine do you use? I used DuckDuckGo for a bit but now I just bounce between Google/Chrome on mobile and Edge/Bing on desktop (unless the results suck then I default back to Google).

Everyone is kind of approaching it a bit differently as the article outlines. Stadia has the biggest head start but xbox has a huge audience base and an existing platform to build on. I think it will be a couple more years before it has the potential to become the new standard. For people with gaming PCs, installing the game locally is still going to be much better (for now). Game streaming widens the audience a lot for sure though. I'm probably biased but I think xbox is doing it right by bundling it with xbox live and their game pass (netflix for games). It's just so accessible since a lot of people are already familiar with the brand and services.

So, this is really cool but I thought tesla already had full self driving capabilities. What are the main features in this new iteration?
Great question! This is a common confusion. So, basically Tesla has a bunch of disparate smart capabilities (e.g. self park, traffic aware cruise control, auto park, etc...). All Teslas come with what they call "Autopilot", which is basically a subset of their smart capabilities. Additionally tesla sells a "Full Self Driving" package. This package contains some more of their smart features, plus any and all advancements they make in full self driving capabilities. So, this package/grouping of features grows over time, until ideally they reach true full self driving.
Now, the new "Full Self Driving Beta" mentioned in all the videos is a new feature added to their "Full Self Driving" software package. The reason is it such a step function improvement from where they currently are is because it is based on an entirely new software stack they have been building for the last couple of years. They started this new software rewrite because they essentially hit a dead end with their old software/direction. With this new iteration they have been able to achieve much much much better driving on surface streets, which before was not very good. Basically before it could only go straight on well marked roads, now we can see it making turns, choosing and changing lanes, inferring lane edges when there are no lane marking, doing round-a-bouts, and just generally driving so much better than it currently can.
Hopefully that helps clarify a bit. Feel free to ask more questions :)

Elon says this time they “have it right”, and now they are on the March of 9's. In other words, they need to solve enough edge cases that they reach a high enough level of safety that it will be accepted by regulators and gain the public’s trust. It will never be perfect, but it needs to be many many time better than the average human before they will release it widely. Elon said he hopes to roll it out to the rest of the fleet by the end of the year. I am optimistic, but I’m not holding my breath. Impressively, they have already pushed 2 updates to the beta since they released it ~10 days ago. They are moving as fast as possible to make bring it to the rest of the fleet. After that, the next question is how long until they can start robotaxis and which cities will be first 🤑

Apple recently rolled out their privacy labels for everything in their App Store, calling them the “nutritional label for apps.” Here’s a nice comparison between a few different messaging apps. It’s as expected but interesting to compare nonetheless. Facebook Messenger is the junk food - and the article/picture here doesn’t even include its “Developer’s Advertising or Marketing” section.
On a related note, it’s rumored that the reason Google hasn’t updated their iOS apps in weeks is to avoid publishing their privacy labels since none of the Google apps have been updated since the privacy label requirement has been rolled out 🙃

A little late to the thread, but I'm glad you guys are thinking about your personal data security! @andelink, you're right, totally not surprised haha. I use Signal as my default messaging app and I'm completely okay with it. I've never had any problems with the UI but my girlfriend didn't like that she couldn't customize the look as much as the default Android app. And yes, normal SMS when one party does not have the app, since Signal is also the name of the secure messaging protocol, and both users must be following compatible protocols for secure messaging to work in any circumstance.
By default, it looks like SMS/MMS is disabled. I imported my contacts into the app and I can see who else has signal installed which is cool. More people in my contacts than I would have expected. Also really reminds me that I need to clean out my contacts. So many old coworkers and classmates in there!
I'm a huge Signal advocate if you all cant tell haha, definitely recommend checking it out if you at all care about that sort of thing.
I guess for me it comes down to how many of my friends/family use iMessage vs how many use Signal. I’d guess more use iMessage so more of my messaging would remain secure if I continue using iMessage since it’s e2e encrypted

The sky crane tech they used seems really cool. And it's crazy to think they were monitoring this landing using really minimal feedback in real time. We're only getting this level of detail now because the rover has had plenty of time to transmit all of the data back to earth post landing.

Up until now they have been rolling it out to a very small group. They are at about 1k people now. Then, he said they would 2x and 10x the group, which was great news in and of itself. Then shortly after, he suddenly announced this “Download Beta” button and seems to indicate that everyone who has bought the FSD package will be able to download the Beta.
Not so much a waitlist, but a very methodical and slow rollout. They have added people to the beta slowly, so they can get people testing it for them, sending updates ~weekly, and iterating on improvements. I think everyone assumed they would continue this relatively slow rollout for a while, until they built enough confidence in it.

They were still using the front-facing radar until this version. For context, every other company attempting FSD is using TONS of sensors (Radar, Lidar, and cameras at a minimum).
For example, here is one of Cruise Automation's cars with their sensors on top of the car.
4 main issues with using more than just cameras:
- Most important: It is a very hard problem to "combine" radar, lidar, and cameras and then decide how to drive. For example, the software has to make decisions in response to tough scenarios: "What happens when the cameras and radar disagree (i.e. the radar thinks there is something in front of the car, but the cameras don't)".
- Radar is "noisy" (in a signal process sense): Radar can lock on to bridges, man-hole covers, etc... and make the car think those objects are other cars.
- Energy. In any car, range is important. Radar and lidar, especially, use a lot of energy, which naturally reduces the amount of energy that can go to moving the car (i.e. range).
- Least important: Cost. Radar and lidar add cost.

I'll try to summarize my thoughts...
- Many news articles about tesla are going to be heavily biased. There are a lot of companies, political figures, etc... that have motivations to oppose Tesla (competing companies, politicians need votes from voters that work for other car companies in swing states, etc...). Going back years, there has almost always been negative news about Tesla that paint a bad picture by leaving out key facts and data. It is tough to find objective reporting about Tesla.
- Regarding autopilot specifically... a few things come to mind:
- Tesla publishes safety data quarterly. The data is probably the best source to base conclusions about tesla and autopilot safety.
- Autopilot is software. We all know software is never complete, and always can be improved. With that in mind, the way I see it, 2 things matter, and if both are a yes, then I can conclude it is better to have the software than not have it.
- 1) Is it safer to have the software than to not have it? This is not to say the software will not make mistakes. It will. It will cause accidents. The real question to ask is: does the data show human+autopilot results in fewer accidents overall than human alone. If so, it is a net improvement.
- 2) Is there continuous improvement to make the software better?
Probably more than you were looking for, but couldn't figure out how to answer more succinctly.

Only now rememebred you asked about my experience with autopilot 😂 autopilot is the shit. I would say autopilot reduces effort/fatigue of driving on the freeway to about 10% relative to driving without it.
They publish cool reports. Another interesting one is their yearly impact report (Google "Tesla impact report").
Regarding the phantom breaking article. In my experience and from what I've heard, this has been almost entirely eliminated by them turning off radar and only using vision. I can't recall experiencing phantom breaking since they turned off radar.
I understand it's software and of course we all have experience with the realities of how software is developed and deployed, but man this is such critical software that any issues at all is enough to turn people away from it for a long time. Like even me, that phantom braking would legitimately terrify me and I wonder how long it would take me to once again trust my car
I couldn't agree more about it being critical software. And the trust issue is absolutely a tough thing to navigate. I imagine a lot of Tesla owners probably don't use autopilot often, if at all, for that reason. They may use it in the future once it reaches some threshold of trustworthiness they have defined for themselves to trust it enough. And then you have people like me who are happy to use it in the interim. I think everyone has their own criteria for how good it needs to be before they'll use it.
The above becomes even more true for FSD-beta which still makes tons of mistakes. As opposed to autopilot, which I would say makes very few mistakes. However both are classified as level 2 systems, requiring the driver to be ready to take over immediately at any time. No sleeping at the wheel yet haha.
The tough thing they are having to navigate is that they need the software in as many cars as possible in order to gather the data to improve the software. So it's kind of a chicken and egg problem. Collecting that massive data set while still providing an option that improves safety is a tough needle to thread.
The end game is of course to have software that is undoubtedly safer than only a human driver when either being used in conjunction with a human or in place of a human altogether.

"passthrough" is a mode where you can use the external facing cameras to see the real world around you. On the quest, this was just used to orient yourself in a space and draw the "play area". But in this new headset they have turned it into an XR feature that games and experiences can actually utilize. The passthrough camera quality is much better than before and is now fully colorized.

This is a really good example of MFA not being secure enough. Any of your companies with MFA through SMS or push notifications (e.g. Duo) should be looking at their systems critically now (if they weren’t before). I know here at Lyft we use Duo just like Uber does.

TL;DR
TeslaBot: since they started 8 months ago, they have been able to make a humanoid robot that is performing a simple task in one of their factories, and navigate around an office setting, using the same vision hardware and ML training systems they have developed for the cars. This reuse of the cars' brain as the humanoid bots' brain is huge. Additionally, designing it from the beginning to be inexpensive to manufacturer.

Oof, yeah this is not going to be good. It's difficult because publicizing the tool raises awareness, but it also means more widespread use (both good and evil). If it's not publicly available, chances are there will still be ways to get your hands on this kind of tech, and the bad guys will be willing to pay for it. And to make things worse, the victims won't even know it exists so they will be more susceptible. I want to vote no and trust that it won't be used by anyone, but we can't go back in time. My opinion tends to lean more and more toward high awareness / open source every day for all of this new AI / generative tech coming out for that reason.

I used it quite a bit over the weekend. Now that I'm getting used to the Bitwarden+Mullvad flow, it's not too bad.
Definitely takes some getting used to and adds a bit of friction to anything that requires a login, but I've been trying to embrace that as a way to break some extensive browsing habits (if it sounds like too much work to take a minute to login, do I really need to do whatever it is?).
It also gives some interesting insight into how different pages work when certain scripts get blocked or a warning pops up that the site is trying to send data to google lol and the session wipe feature came in handy when I got rate-limited due to some light scripting 😅
Some sites are just broken though, but if a site just refuses to load if you don't let it communicate with other sites and run certain scripts, is it really a site you want to be on? 🤔

Most of it is focused on generative AI. Worth a watch at 1.5x speed for sure. I liked how Bard was embedded into some of the Google suite products already, along with Google search as well. - Wow, the transparency (or pseudo-transparency, can't tell) is super cool. That's going to make a big difference along with the comfort in people's willingness to wear this thing both for long periods, and in front of others. If the FPS and resolution are high enough, this could be pretty legit.
- Wonder how those gaming features are going to work on 3rd party consoles. They didn't really explain it.
- Ok, so they put the battery on a wire that you keep in your pocket instead of in the headset. Historically I think the choice has always been made to put the battery in the back of the strap as a counter-weight, but this does look much more comfy and the headset must be light enough that it isn't necessary. It also probably makes swapping batteries easier. The cord would be annoying though.
- Whoa, the digital avatar scan is pretty cool. Not quite MetaHuman good, but pretty good! 😉 I'm guessing this is what powers the "pseudo-transparency" on the front of the device as well so that people can see your eyes and emotions even with the headset on.
- That resolution is wild. What is 64x more than a retina display?!
- That spatial audio tech is wild. Without even having direct contact with your ear... The idea that it maps to the acoustics of your environment (objects and materials) without actually thoroughly mapping your environment is a bit hard to believe, but I'm ready to be impressed! I mean I suppose they are performing a 3d map of the environment to an extent.
one thing that wasn’t clear in the video to me was, while they were demoing a facetime call, they only should what the other people on the call who weren’t wearing a headset looked like. what do you look like on your facetime call when you’re dialing in from your headset?

Yeah, the general strike is one day June 12th. Though many subs are doing a few days, and there are also many other subs shutting down indefinitely
Going private means only select users can view and post. But the bot that mods used to go private removed any whitelisted users from the sub before taking it private, so it’s essentially shutting down, IMO. Some info can be found on r/ModCoord. But if mods disappear for an extended period of time, Reddit usually finds new mods and opens the sub again.
But yeah, it’s hella sad how Reddit handled this. If you or anyone has not read the post by Christian, it’s a must read to understand all the context here. It really is an awful awful look for Reddit and specifically their CEO. Made me question my support/use of the site:

I’m super out of the loop. I’m unfamiliar with Rumble and don’t know what’s going on with Russell Brand
I'm sorta new to this, so i don't know everything. partly why I wanted to share it here and see if you guys knew more.
What I know (or think I know):
- Rumble is a youtube competitor who says they want free speech, and thus won't take down videos unless they are illegal content.
- Russell Brand has been doing a show on Rumble for a while where he talks about topics that often get you removed from Youtube (covid, big pharma, military industrial complex, etc...).
- Sexual assault allegations came out against Russell Brand. Very quickly he was basically cancelled from everything (youtube monetization, in person shows, etc...). Rumble seems to be the only platform saying "innocent until proven guilty".
- The link above is from the UK Parliament to Rumble (a US company), seemingly to apply pressure for them to de-monitize his Rumble content.
This only came up on my radar because many of the Twitter Files folks say it feel very similar to what was shown in the Twitter Files that govt pressures private companies to censor.

Arguing to make the Chrome UX objectively shittier, with intentionally worse auto-complete / search suggestions, so users will have to make more Google searches and thus get more ad impressions.
(The feature in question is the up-ranking of your previously visited websites in the omnibox auto-complete suggestions, After shipping the up-ranking feature, users Googled less, because the result they were after was right in the omnibox suggestions as they typed.)

That will be decided by the judge in January. And Google will probably challenge the verdict so it'll probably still be a while before we see anything meaningful come from this. My hope is that we eventually end up back on the Android and Apple app stores though.
This is just a really surprising and exciting verdict since it challenges the status quo and argues for the rights of app developers in the mobile ecosystem. It's especially surprising since Epic lost a similar case against Apple a couple years ago.

Yeah, Epic left both the app stores voluntarily several years ago. They wanted to allow users to buy and spend in game Fortnite currency (vbucks) without acquiring it through the app store owners. This isn't allowed today because it circumvents the taxable transaction. This is terrible for devs for a lot of reasons, but it's also a bad user experience for cross platform games because the currency can't travel with your account from platform to platform. And then I think they were offered hush money by Google and declined it publicly, taking them (and Apple) to court instead.

Interesting 🤔 I like the idea of exploring a new era of personal devices, but it still doesn't feel like anything new. Just a different form factor and less polished platform (e.g. what does security look like). And a lot of it seems like it could honestly just be an app on your existing phone, if it weren't for the specialized OS.
Ramble: It will be interesting to see how it develops. I definitely see the appeal to the quick access to LLMs. I use bard/chatgpt and Google assistant to do a lot of stuff throughout the day, and easier access to them would be helpful. The most frictionless experience I currently have is using Google assistant when I have an earbud in to control smart home devices and do simple queries. Once they add bard to Google assistant, handsfree querying of an LLM will be great. I'm not sure another device in my pocket is what I really want, vs some tiny/minimal wearable, or maybe a combo of the two, so the screen is there for tasks that require such.

I'm sure they have some ideas on how to accomplish it though if they are talking about it. It's a lot more scary too though because it essentially exposes a path for injecting data (memories, images, etc) into the brain. That could be exploited in some bad ways.
When you say bridging a gap, does that mean the sight would still rely on the organic eyeball? Or would it be an "artificial eye"? My concerns would only really be applicable if it was artificial. If you're just repairing the organic eye's connection to the brain, that just seems like a medical procedure and less like a Nueralink product I would expect. It's famously an unsolved medical issue though.
I think it is the latter. Essentially read signals from one side of the gap/damage in the brain, and writing the signals to the other side, which would continue along to the organic eye, as if they were never interrupted. That's at least what I recall hearing a long time back

I have the OG oculus quest v1. I've had a ton of fun with it over the years! It was a really capable device and I loved how they kept bringing new features to it, even years later (hand/finger tracking, passthrough, PC connectivity, etc). It's pretty outdated at this point though and I haven't used it in quite a while. I might end up grabbing the next gen device when it comes out just to play around with again though, I'm sure the tech has come a long way, and it's quite affordable.

Tesla fsd v12. It's getting crazy good.
Since v12 released a few weeks ago, I use it nearly all the time. V11 and prior we're too cautious/annoying in many situations, so I would engage and disengage frequently.
The new model 3 performance is reportedly amazing. We love our model y, since we need the extra space. Can't go wrong with any of them. The prices are way down from recent highs, which is great. If you're gonna buy one, let me get that referral 😉

I recall researching that rwd on electric cars isn't as bad as it is on gas cars, due to the distribution of weight being more even in an electric car vs all at the front of a gas car. It's all about cost. Currently rockets are expendable, so it's like every time you take an airplane to another city they throw the airplane away. If that was the case practically no one would use airplanes. While it is totally valid journalism, IMO, as Sabrina Tavernise points out, the focus on these mistakes is pretty dull (as opposed to discussing the actual cuts themselves). NIST was in the news last month for needing to reduce a number of their initiatives due to being the target of large layoffs by the current administration. I heard of talk about congress maybe doing something specifically for NIST, but I don't remember where that ended up.

Google sells ad space on behalf of the publishers and also sells the ads on behalf of the advertisers. It also runs the auction that places the ads into the ad space. And crucially, there are leaked emails, other evidence that demonstrate corruption of this dual- (multi?) agency arrangement.
Some examples:
- The Google ad exchange favored its own platforms, limiting the ability of other exchanges to compete fairly in bidding for ad inventory.
- In limiting the number of bidders, Google inflated the prices for ad inventory.
- Google engaged in bid rigging where competitors agree on who will win a bid, again to inflate prices.

- Google unilaterally changing bid mechanics raising costs 15%
This is only a small number of the anti-competitive practices Google employed. I find the leaked emails most damning (prior thread we had probably deleted by Slack now). These links above list others. Acquiring competitors, forced adoption of Google products, etc

We’re going to have to make some assumptions as it isn’t common practice for companies to share all their invoices, and I think extrapolating via cited equations is fairly safe. And I don’t have much of a stake in this conversation other than basic interest to converse with friends, but it does seem like you were adding friction to the conversation with some counter-assumptions (is Twitter a reliable source, what if this company deserves it, what if this company has a different experience than normal/expected, etc). Lastly, we know that there was at least some drastic increase in tariffs recently based on the president’s comments, and I believe the point of the original post was grounding the impact of a trade war on a local company that we are all familiar with (even if it was delivered in an incendiary manner).

However, this is our first ‘big bill’, where a large portion was subjected to a 125%+20%+25% import markup. Unlike other taxes like sales tax where we collect on behalf of the state and then submit it back at the end of the month, or income taxes, where we only pay if we are profitable, tariff taxes are paid before we sell any of the products and are due within a week of receipt which has a big impact on cash flow.

Whoa, if this is the case then the new Xbox handheld just got my attention. Not only do you have Xbox, but you also get Steam, EGS, and other Windows launchers as well. On top of that, the specs are shaping up to be about 2x performance over the steam deck on the premium model. Unfortunately, no OLED screen (even though you do get 120FPS).
Yeah, it's a pretty cool move. The steam deck is great because you can take your PC gaming library on the go, but it is still limited by the fact that it's linux and there is mixed compatibility. A windows based handheld that isn't locked to a particular launcher feels like the ultimate way to take your whole PC gaming library on the go.

No, they are not. This is actually considered a SteamDeck competitor. However, it's running a Windows OS and steam has a windows client so it's fair game to allow people to launch steam games from the device I guess.

Very good read IMO. I also love how they used not only Google's own statements but also Gemini's statements in a few places where Google official legal documents were insufficient. Found it very interesting, quite damning, and depressing as it adds more examples of abhorrent behavior made possible by indifference from employees just like us. (Not saying anyone here, but software engineers in general).
